a coupple of questions about the app- my school has left all us applicants completely clueless- we're basically doing it on our own. if anyone has any input, it would be hugely appreciated...

"career objectives" - what goes in here? I know what they're looking for, but how detailed do we actually have to be? does this include what we want in terms of a residency? Is it OK to be vague? (ei - want to do a fellowship in a specialty that has yet to be determined)

"outside interests & hobbies" - can we just list things here, or is better to give a one liner?

Also, I posted this before in a different thread, does anyone know of good, relaxed transition years in the northeast? Nobody has a clue at my school, or they're not sharing.

again, any input and you'd be my new best friend!

thanx for everything guys

career objectives - i was deliberately vague here, just wrote something about interest in research and teaching. i didn't want to list a subspecialty interest just in case it was a field that that particular program wasn't strong in

hobbies - i actually wrote a small paragraph here, describing my interests. i'm pretty sure anything is permissible here

Career objectives: Make it clean. And by that, I mean vague. Don't say you definitely want to do a certain specialty, academic vs. private, etc. Think about it this way, whatever you say definitively, there will always be someone that has the opposite mindset. You never know if that 'someone' is going to be offended, concerned, perplexed by you indicating that you want to do something that he didn't want to do at all. The goal is to NOT get that reaction. The only way to ensure that is to make it CLEAN by being vague or not giving a definitive answer about a career path. Just make it look like you're open to everything, be safe.

Outside interests: Whatever you want. List, paragraph, whatever. They read so many of these things, they just want to know what else you do. I don't even remember how I did it, but I don't think one is better than the other.

I don't know anything about TYs in the northeast, sorry.

Good Luck.

thanx again for the responses.... can you tell i'm a little stressed? i'm trying to send out my app today.

last question: do you guys know if the registration # for sf match has to be directly on documents such as transcripts or LOR's?

I said I wanna go into academic medicine & then commented on the type of residency training program that I'm interested in....I made a list for my hobbies.
