Is there any problem with using your father as the dentist you shadow? I'm asking because many schools require a letter from the dentist, and I wonder if they would take it as seriously as one from a dentist who doesn't necessarily have any kind of vested interest in my success?

I think it's a great idea to shadow your dad and get additional insight into a dental office. However, you should definitely find another dentist to shadow to get a letter of rec from since any letter from a close family member will obviously appear biased. This shouldn't be that hard though since I'm sure your dad has a few dentist buddies who he can introduce you to 😀

i worked at my dads dental office ever since i was young. when i was applying for dental school i could have easily volunteered at other office. i choose not to because i felt comfortable working with my dad.

with that said i do agree with the general pubilc about how a family member's letter would have a less of an impact. some might even say a letter from a family member's doesnt even count.

nonetheless, i did ask my dad to write me a letter. but i only sent this letter to UNLV. that was the only school i applied that required a letter from a dentist. i could have easily gotten a letter from one of my dad's friends but i didnt want to. my dad knows me the best. i didnt really care about the letter having a less of an impact.

well........i dunno. the letter might have not counted. i havent heard from UNLV, but i did get an interview.........

A letter from a parent would not help you at all. Any parent would lie or exaggerate for their child. No admissions people would take that letter seriously.... if they take it at all.
If it was just a letter to verify that you shadowed there.... then I dont think that would be a big deal. ...But a letter of reccomendation, no way.

I think this is good. Shadow your dad so that you know what to expect. Afterwards shadow another dentist but since you've shadowed dad you will know what to expect instead of acting lost or clueless which might annoy dentist.👍

Shadowing your dad is great since you have plenty of time to learn things in his office. You are more than welcome to ask questions and practice. However, for a letter of recommendation from a dentist, I think it's better to get it from another dentist who is not related to you.
