Enough to articulate what a DO does and why you want to be one.
Whether that takes you two hours or two months, it's up to you.
I would err on the long side, myself, but you may feel differently.

I'm going to post this here instead of starting a new thread on this....

I've got a doctor's appointment on 9/15 coming up and it's with a DO (first visit since I have new health insurance) - if he seems nice enough, would it be ok to ask if I could shadow him in the future? I'm applying to DO schools next year so I thought this would be a good opportunity to approach a DO.

What do you guys think?

I don't see why not. Go ahead and ask. If the DO doesn't feel comfortable with it because you are his patient then you could always ask him if he knows another DO that would be willing to let you shadow. Its always worth a shot. You wont have the chance if you don't ask. Good luck!
