how necessary is it to shadow a DPM? i have shadow hours and LORs from several MD's but i just couldnt find the time to shadow a DPM.

You'll need a letter from a DPM, so probably pretty necessary. Realistically, you can apply anytime in the next like 4-6 months and still not be *behind* so hopefully you can find some time in the next half-year!

It is absolutely necessary. Every school requires a letter of recommendation from a DPM and also it can give you very valuable insight into the profession.

is there such a things as a list of podiatrists that are available for shadowing? i am from NYC and so would LOVE to shadow someone in my vicinity....

You can probably call NYCPM and they could help you, too.

how much shadowing is typically recommended? as in how many hours? as of right now i have secured shadow appointments with 2 DPM's that r directly recommended by NYCPM and they seem amazing. they both supposedly also sit on the admissions committee from time to time (or so they told me).

also, just how much weight does a letter from them hold?

Get 20 hours, and you'll be golden. I think the DPM letters probably hold no weight, except "negative" weight. What I mean to say is, a letter from a DPM will not "help" you at all, but can certainly hold you back if it is negative. If the DPM says, "This kid shadowed, i think he'd be a good pod," there will be no difference to "This student was by far the most interesting, curious, and intelligent student I have ever had the honor of hosting."

However, if the letter says, "Naye3m was LITERALLY the worst student I have ever seen. His personal hygiene was atrocious, he showed up in ripped jean shorts and a muddy t-shirt, swore at patients, and was visibly drunk. I do not recommend them for admission." It will hurt your cause.

I am getting interviews, and only shadowed a Pod twice, for total of 12 hrs. I don't think the amount of hours is set in stone... but the fact that you need to shadow is necessary, including a letter of recommendation.

To shadow? Call up the office and ask to come in one day. Put on a shirt and tie and go shadow for the day. It's not a job interview, it's just a day of observation.
