Hey all,

I have one question about shadowing doctors. I have shadowed some doctors at an international hospital oversea in China, that is accredited by the Joint Committee International. The billingual hospital consists of team of physicians around the world, largely composed of the U.S, denmark, local doctors, etc there. I was wondering how adcoms will view towards my experience, since it is overseas. I did gain some really awesome insightful experience like morning rounds with physician team, critical care in ICU, etc... I was wondering how adcoms will view towards my experience, since it is overseas. Would they view it negatively?

Of course not, just don't really spend your time doing this. The MCAT is WAY WAY WAY more important.

This is definitely a positive experience, and is much more interesting than typical shadowing. But as the previous poster said, you should still get some US experience for your own education as much as for the application.

This is a great experience that adcoms will certainly view positively. Highlight this experience in your application and it will be a great asset for you. Normally shadowing doesn't help an application very much. It is just something that is kind of expected. Trust me, applicants who shadow tons of doctors don't impress anyone. Much better to spend your time doing something more unique and productive than follow a physician around. And that is why what you did is better than the traditional shadowing experience, it is very unique and will help your application stand out.

The true purpose of shadowing is to make sure you know what you are getting yourself into when you apply. Sure, you put it on your application, but it really should be something for you. Just as the previous poster said, you still should do some shadowing in the US to get a flavor of what practicing in an American health care setting is like. That should be the only reason to do it, not to appease adcoms because my guess is that they couldn't really care less.

If your applying to US med schools, then you still need to get some experience with US healthcare

Why?? I'm curious as to why the OP needs US shadowing, unless its to be familiar with the US healthcare system.
