Lets compile a list so we can give future shadower's something they can expect.

Experience:

Best: Cardiology patient telling my how my preceptor saved her life on Christmas. (Gave me free food too for a week)
Best: Anaestheologist telling me everything especially tips on the political aspect of medicine (pimping, malignant personality, back stabbers etc).

Worst: Radiology pimp me with random ass question that I have no way of answering

Most Awkward: Colonoscopy while the patient is NOT under anesthesia (he decided to drive himself....) and this particular case lasted over 1 hour!!.

Most Tense: During a hip replacement the patient's heart just quit working, (this is a healthy guy and nothing that would suggest this is likely) while I was talking to the anesthesiologist. I had to run into another room and get help. The whole time I was thinking " **** hope I didnt kill someone because I was distracting the anesthesiologist!"

Best People to Shadow:

Anesthesiologist-Can talk to you all the time.
Cardiologist-Can brief you before each case pretty fun. And got all kinds of procedure. You get to go to the cath lab and the tech will talk you though everything. But they personally cant talk to you during procedures.

GI-Can talk to you during procedures.

Worst People to Shadow:

Radiology-I am bias because I got pimped

Pathology-If you are not at academic center you wont see **** (need double headed microscope). If you are at an teaching hospital then it is pretty cool

Orthopedic Surgeons-They need to do their stuff fast, and there are tons of people around them. They are much harder to follow than just follow the anesthesiologist around, because they move from room to room while anesthesiologist stay the same room. (3 anesthesiologist for every 2 Surgeon at my place to ensure best room usage). And if you follow them they tend to schedule the same procedures back to back which can become boring if you dont like nails and hammer that much.

no one gives a damn about your shadowing experiences.

No one give a damn about you not giving a damn lol. We already realize that "you hate pre-med"

I on the other hand do like other premeds. And already a few people PMed me about how to get more shadowing experience.

So stop being so pessimistic lol.

OP, this word you keep using, "pimp," it does not mean what you think it means

We were talking about random residency stuff. Then I guess the machine made some noice. Anesthesiologist, stop talking, turned around looked at the machine for 2 sec then stood up. He starts checking the patients airway, and pump air into the patient using the air bag attached.

So I can sense something is going on (well the guy's face is kinda blue too x.x) and I moved away.

So now about 10 sec later he informed surgeon that the guy heart is not beating. Before this the surgeon was happy chatting and hammering with music in the back ground. So the first time the surgeon look a little shocked and was like what? the anesthesiologist had to repeat himself.

anesthesiologist told me to go to the next OR (remember 3 OR 2 Surgeon 3 Anesthesiologist so one is just preping) and get another anesthesiologist.

So took me a little to explain to the other doctor what is going on.

I didnt want to get in anyone's way so i stayed in the supply room in between the OR and watch them injecting a million things.

Finally this guy's heart start beating just as the code team arrives....

I got back in the room the anesthesiologist was like yea...anesthesiology 99% calm and 1% terror I am glade you had the opportunity to see it. Then he went back to the topic we were talking before. ..My heart was still beating pretty fast though lol....

This whole thing probably only took like 5 minutes...
