I have research and volunteer experience, and I am currently looking for a shadowing position and I was wondering is it mandatory that you shadow a DO if you want to go to a DO school or is it okay if you just shadow an MD? They essentially have the same job, and the more people I talk to the more I learn that there really isn't that much of a difference in the actual workplace

It is not mandatory to have a DO letter, but it is a plus for DO schools. So I suggest trying to shadow a MD and get a letter from them for now. In the mean time, try to find a DO to shadow to get that letter also.

The way I look at it, if you shadowed an MD and saw what they did and enjoyed the experience, why not apply to MD? I feel that in order to showcase that you know what DO's do, you need at least to shadow one.

Many DO schools "prefer" a LOR from a DO but will "accept" an MD letter. Why would you put in a ton of effort and then short change your application by not shadowing a DO, when unlike MCAT and gpa it is completely within your power to check that box. It also provides you with something to relate to when they ask, "why DO?"

You have plenty of time between now and the next cycle. Make yourself as absolutely competitive as possible to be in that ~40% who get in vs the 60% who don't.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate and say that sometimes it's really hard trying to find DO to shadow and get a letter on top of that. It was like pulling teeth for me because majority would respond saying that their job doesn't allow it or they don't have time.

My inclination is that -- because if this obvious fact -- a lack of letter is unlikely to be held against you too much, assuming the rest of your app. is in order.

Certain schools require PROOF you have exposure to OMM *cough cough VCOM and it's probably much easier to get that DO shadowing out of the way prior to the conditional acceptance which requires you to submit a LOR in a relatively short time frame. Unless you live in Wyoming, you SHOULD be able to at least get 4 hours of shadowing a DO. After that, if you haven't sullied your reputation by being on your phone or letting the nurse prep the room for the next patient by her/himself (sanitizing the table, making coffee, etc.), the physician would very likely let you shadow again. THEN you ask for the letter.

An alternate method involves contacting a DO school's OMM rotation site coordinator and asking to sit in on a few sessions with the instructor and third/fourth year students. Western U does this if you sign up 3-5 months in advance. Don't expect a letter, but since you have coordinated this with an office, you can provide actual contact info to that office, which looks great on your app, ESPECIALLY when applying to THAT particular school. The easiest letters to get are the private practice DOs in FM, especially when you meet the office staff IN PERSON when you ask. Have your CV, photo ID, and things like PS/MCAT info available when you go.

I would like to hopefully apply this cycle, my stats are okay I think, my gpa is a 3.73, but it should go up after this semester to around a 3.77. I am taking the MCAT this week and I'm expecting around a 508 if all goes well (my scores on the scored fl was 127/125/130/126 which I took this past Sunday), but I usually do better on CARS, idk what happened on this one. I talked to the premed adviser and what I'm missing on my resume is shadowing experience, but the problem is there aren't that many DOs around my area, mostly MDs.

I posted a list of ways to get shadowing experiences. MD is OK, but just be motivated to find a DO and you can. With that GPA you could go MD but IMO a DO is better for what I want.

You can get in with an MD letter, but you might be barred from applying to certain schools due to their requirement of a DO letter.

If you live within driving distance of a DO school, go visit and chat up their DO Faculty. My own DO colleagues love it when people do this.

Thank you, I did not think of that. I found a few DOs around my area, I will try to talk to them this weekend, should I call their office beforehand or is it okay if I just walk in, what's the best way to reach out to them?

Hey! Not at all man:

3.4 cGPA
3.2 sGPA
27 MCAT (7/9/11)
1,000+ volunteer hours
10,000+ work hours
Minimal research
Lots of Leadership positions

I think SOP is to call ahead.

Call and speak with the office manager. That or you could always bring coffee and bagels and then ask when Dr XYZ would have 15 min to talk about your being able to shadow. Many hospitals have shadowing programs but you often have to get your foot in the door as a volunteer first.
