Shadowing Hour Log?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a quick question. First off, I am a freshman in college right now and I have just started shadowing. I was wondering if I should keep a record of how many hours I shadow, the date and the name of the doctors I shadow. I have shadowed many doctors and I am not sure if I should just concentrate on just one doctor or shadow as many doctors as I can.. Also, how many hours does a typical dental school applicant have of shadow time? Thanks for your help guys..

Keep a log. You will have to fill out a "dental experience" section in your application. It also will help to jot down a few of the things you saw/your thoughts about what you saw. This will help you to remember everything plus to give you a few ideas of things to write about in your personal statement.

There is usually no minimum of hours, except for schools that specifically say they want a certain amount of hours. I think I have about 100 hours total of shadowing, but do what you think is enough to get a good idea of what the field is about.

hmm. What I did was spend about a week of time with several dentists. Some were more sociable and willing to teach than others. I found a few that I liked that worked in one practice, and I stuck with it. It helped that there were/are a few GP's and specialists in their office, so it was good exposure.

Just my advice, but if you are seeking a letter of recommendation from a dentist you are shadowing, you should get to know them and their practice, and that takes time. With time as well, they taught me the basics of being a dental assistant, which is a good way of learning other stuff, such as how to tie a few different suture knots to close up a flap surgery. If all you are looking for is their john hancock on a job shadowing form though, 20 hours alone would probably be enough for that.

Hi Mike,
I am a Pre-dent student. I am lost right now. I was wondering how should i approach the dental office for shadowing. I have tried a couple of places but no one responded. Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Don't e-mail. Call or go in person.

Tell receptionist my name is ... I go to ... I am applying to dental school and was wondering if I could do some job shadowing at the office etc.

She will take name and number and say she will ask and call back.

Call 10 places maybe you will get 1-2 calls back.

Hey guys,

So I am also barely starting out on my shadowing. I have shadowed at 1 local pediatric dental office so far. The experience was good and I liked it. The question that I have that also goes along with the OP's question is how do you carry yourself while shadowing?

I mean do you just sit back and watch or do you try to get a good look at what is being done? With the particular dentist I shadowed, he was great in giving me the opportunity to get closer and take a look at different things when it was appropriate.

Thanks.
