Shadowing hours, confirmation

Just a quick question.

Is there a section in the AADSAS application where I can input the contact info for the dentists that I shadowed for confirmation of my hours?

Really.....?? Won't people take advantage of this? I know that applicants for the most part are honest people, but this is a pretty big loophole in my opinion...

Or at least the hours should be accompanied by a reference letter confirming the hours or something.

I'm not sure if I completely agree with your assumption that the majority of applicants are honest people lol. But yeah, from what I've heard, a LOT of applicants do fib their shadowing hours.

Seems totally unfair to people who actually devoted a considerable amount of time to shadowing only to be on even playing field as someone who merely fudged their numbers... Sigh...............

I definitely rounded to the next round number.

But no, there's no real confirmation. However, you'll need a letter of rec from at least one dentist, and I'm sure they will tell by the letter whether you met him once or spent a significant amount of time in his office.

I believe some schools specifically wanted an hour number in the dentist's LOR. Also, it's very easy to google a dentist and call their office to confirm anything you list. You list the city,State you worked with them in, and it narrows it down even further.

How is it an even playing field? Shadowing is just a number. But, your experiences will come through in an interview.

Well, by that same argument, GPA and DATs are also just numbers.

Indeed, the experiences will come through in interviews. But to get the interviews in the first place, the paper application comes first. And on paper, 1000 hours - whether you did it or not - looks the same. So yeah, even playing field.

Let's put it this way. If there was indeed a way for the admissions committee to confirm the exact hours and was an integral part of the selection process, the interview invites would be so delayed it would drive everybody crazy. The invites are late enough as it is, they really can't afford to go through every dentist of each and every one of the thousands of applicants that they receive every cycle.

TLDR; shadowing has been reduced to a formality by this point.
