I thought I could get an easy answer from previous threads but all are pre-dental and these kids are shadowing for 200+ hours. 😱

How many hours are appropriate for shadowing doctors?

I have the opprotunity to shadow a neurosurgeon, but is it necessary I expand to other specialties as well and which ones?

I do not think the number of total hours of shadowing really matters. What matters is how much exposure to different fields you get. I feel the best way to do this is the ED. At the ED, you can see plastics, ortho, ophthal, GI, etc etc. You can therefore see what you are interested and what you are not. Finally, spend different times of the day in the ED since the types of cases that present are hour-dependent.

thank you for your input c7places.

Say I do get a chance to see all different kinds of specialties, how many hours though would be appropriate for each or total? I don't want to screw myself thinking I've shadowed enough hours, and the adcoms trip to see that I barely shadowed.
