So far, I have about 48 shadowing hours from 2 different dentists. I work full time so it's very very hard to gather hours with my schedule. I started off going once a week on my lunch break, and then realized that was very ineffecient, so I started taking vacation days and staying the whole day. Anyways, I have a few questions.

1. I plan on applying to 10+ schools, so there is a good chance one of those schools "requiring" 100 hours of shadowing. Is that a hard requirement? Do I absolutely have to get 100? If I have 80, will they just throw away my app?
2. I plan on submitting my application this June, and I doubt I can fulfill the 100 hours, but I plan on reporting 100. I'm not going to fudge my numbers, but I plan to have 100 hours by the time interviews come around. Do you forsee any issues with this?
3. Anybody have any advice for a 9-5 working person for building up shadowing hours?

Or you could check to see if the 10 schools you have in mind do have the 100+ requirement. Reporting what you do not have ... wouldn't that be like a lie? It is conceivable that by the time you get to your last hour of shadowing "requirement" you may well decide that dentistry is not for you.

I can't say anything about #1 and 2 above... use your best judgment

But for #3... some dentists do work on saturdays... see if you can find one who will let you shadow

Any dental chains in your area with weekend/evening hours? Are you near a dental school? Some do community service on the weekends. I don't have a dental school nearby, but there is a dental residency program in a nearby city and the residents take call. Maybe you could shadow an on call resident? Some surgeons start really early in the morning. Do any local oral surgeons start operating before 7am? Get out your phone book and search the dental ads to see who may offer early extended hours.
