shadowing hours

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine Recommended: 100 hours

The recommended hours is 100 hours and that applies to most dental schools, so just shadow 100 hours and cover your butt.

The problem is I won't be able to get to 100 come june 4th, so I guess im pretty screwed. Michigan requires 100 now as a new rule, and Buffalo strongly recommends 100, might as well be the same thing as requiring, and is used as part of their admission process.

Could you get them by June 14th?? Or even June 24th? You'd still be applying early....
If you submit before you get to 100, I probably wouldn't apply to michigan, because it's required, and not just recommended.

Michigan says 100 hours/volunteering, does lab volunteering count or does volunteering actually mean community service type of volunteering,

If you got the goods, it is unlikely that shadowing hours, in your case, would be problematic, unless, they are looking for a reason to reject you.

Agreed, that statement might only apply for buffalo though.

Michigan clearly states in red "Applicants are required to demonstrate a minimum of 100 hours of dental shadowing and/or volunteering. Applicants without this minimum number of hours may not be reviewed or considered for interview."

Would someone care to explain what kind of volunteer they want, does lab volunteer count?

I am pretty sure by volunteering they mean community service, helping ppl that are in need, donating your time etc. Lab volunteering only benefits one person and that is your PI. I am sure it does not count as a volunteering acitivity that schools want.

And I dont think PIs are in need ! just sayin'

Like doc toothache said, if you have golden numbers, then 50 hours shouldn't be a problem. But if you're somewhere in the middle like most of us, you probably need the hours. Just try and get a 100 and when you do- contact Michigan right away and let them know.
I don't think lab volunteer would count as the volunteer work they're looking for...sorry :/

"May not" or will not?

It's almost like a contradiction, they require it but at the same time, they may still interview you. I guess by putting it in red, it's like a warning telling everyone that without that 100, don't apply or you will be wasting money.

What about a mix and match between general and specialty? I have 100 hours. But 45 was with general. And Another 60ish was with my dentist, who happens to be a prosthodontist. Would a school like buffalo say no can do?

EDIT:

I just looked on their website and found this, which is good for me I suppose...

Experience in Dentistry
Prior to application, candidates are strongly encouraged to acquire a minimum of 100 hours of experience in the field of clinical dentistry. This may be done in either general or specialty private practices, and/or in a clinic situation either in a hospital or dental school. The nature of this experience should consist of gaining knowledge of the day-to-day aspects of patient care. The Student Admissions Committee feels that experience in clinical dentistry gives applicants a more realistic impression of the day-to-day responsibilities involved in the practice of dentistry and better prepares them to meet the demands of the dental school curriculum. This is for your own benefit-to help make certain that this is what you want to do for your career!
