Hello All,

I hope this message is appropriate here. I am a pre-med student who might potentially purse MD/PhD because of my strong interest and background in basic science research. I am currently volunteering at a trauma 1 ER and shadowing a wound specialist in a nursing home/rehab center. What I would really love to be able to do is shadow a surgeon. I am open to all options but I do have a strong interest in trauma and cardio. I would appreciate any input!

Thanks for your time

I would ask the doctors you know from the ER or nursing home if they have any surgical colleagues who are open to having undergrad students, probably the easiest way to get shadowing opportunities is through that sort of connection.

I know of a shadowing program at a hospital in northern NJ, might be a bit of a commute but if you're interested I can PM you the info

^ Do you have any more details about that clinic? I've heard of Dr. Kuo but not this other opportunity. 😛

I have actually never met Dr.Kuo. I started with Dr.Cheung at Riverside in manhattan but he stopped doing wound clinic there and a plastic surgeon took over for him.

I am originally from NY so I did a lot of shadowing there during the summers. I don't want to name any doctors out of respect for their privacy. However I will say I literally just emailed random doctors(lots), I probably got one response for every 40-50 doctors I emailed, and I probably got like 1 acceptance out of every 100. Doctors generally don't like to email back, or just don't care b/c they have enough med students and such. If the subject saids student instead of shadowing I've gotten more responses, target younger doctors who are more sympathetic to your "cause". Just email as many as possible, and show genuine interest, explian a bit why you are interested. Don't just say something like, Hi my name is X, I am interested in X specialty(example neurosurgery) b/c I like the brain. That will do nothing.

I'm volunteering at Lutheran ER they are Trauma Level 1 certified. It is further out in Brooklyn so might be a commute depending on where you are.

Can I ask which ER you're volunteering in? I'm in the process of volunteer clearance at mount Sinai and they only seem to have volunteers in their geriatric er. I'd like to be in a trauma er. If you could provide any leads I would so appreciate it.

And regarding shadowing a surgeon my dad is one and I'll ask him. I've found that shadowing is really challenging bc of HIPPA laws. All the volunteer depts say that it's not allowed. I'm still trying to figure out how to make it happen. Even my dads hospital is not helpful (and mind you when I was 15 back in the 90s I would just mosey on into th OR with him no questions asked).

I'll see what I can dig up for you.

I actually ended up emailing different doctors. And a lot of them are actually very open to having students observe. But it is also not up to the doctor, depending on hospital, some will let you in the OR and some don't.

And as an encouragement to others who are trying to find doctors to shadow. I emailed around 20 doctors two days ago and have received 6 responses. So don't be afraid to cold-email.

Do you mind saying which hospital they're affiliated with?
