Hey guys. I was wondering if med schools care where did you shadow a doctor. I can shadow doctors in Mongolia. Would that count? Also, how many hours of shadowing is desired?
US schools will expect you to have an understanding of what it's like to practice medicine in the US. Shadow internationally if you like, and go ahead and list it, but plan to have at least 50 hours of US shadowing, too.

I actually think it's great to get unique, varied experiences. It adds to your sense of diversity. I shadowed in another country and it helped me observe how some things, like patient-centered care, are evident in many otherwise different circumstances 🙂 and learning in a new culture was also a good experience. If I were you, I would go for that experience! Just make sure to observe and not practice (ie, don't operate on patients if you do not have the medical skillset and licensing, etc).

That said, I do think it would be good, in addition, to shadow in America-just to get the variety of experiences.

Hours...I heard that upwards of 20 hours is good, upwards of 30 is really good.

I shadowed in China and never shadowed in the US and didn't realize until I was applying that this might be an issue. I ended up being able to spin my experience in China as something that sparked my interest in my minor (exploring how culture and social history impacts the doctor patient relationship) and I had a lot of clinical volunteer experience/a lot of doctor interaction outside of a clinical setting in the US and it all worked out. If I could do it over though, I definitely wouldn't recommend shadowing overseas and I think that summer could've been better used doing research and shadowing a little in the US. My little sister is premed and just starting out college now too and it's been suggested that she do something similar to what I did and I've been strongly advising against it for her.

I have shadowed in India and the US, but it may have been okay in my case because I am an international student. Regardless I did make it clear that I understood what practicing in the US was like.

Was it difficult to get into med school as an international student? I’m asking because I, too, am an international student & people always tell me how hard it is for international students to get into US med school & all that.
