So I have been shadowing a physician lately, and before our next visit he asked me to write him a 5 paragraph essay about a topic that we talked about. For example, lupus. What would be a good way/format to write about something like this?

Thanks

Lupus eh? ahahahahaha House aspirations??

Standard 5 paragraph essay should work well for you here. Intro, body, conclusion.

Intro - describe lupus, what you talked about what you will discuss in the essay.

Body - Diagnosis, prognosis, treatment of lupus

Conclusion - Summarize your findings.

Use journal articles on lupus to augment your paper.

I may be a huge nerd, but I rather like this assignment you've been given.

This is so dumb why would he ask you to do that

I agree! this is pretty cool. Sounds like you've picked a good physician, with him being so interactive. 😛 Put some time into these little assignments and you should get a great LOR out of it!

ya he is awesome, I will put an entire day to it tomorrow. Time to sleep now 🙂

thanks this is exactly what I needed 🙂

It doesn't matter how you format your essay, he will not read it anyway.

Pessimism flourishes on here.

What if he does read it? Then gives constructive feedback. Then talks about it in the OPs LOR... either way... you know that if a doc asked you to do this you would do it and obsess over it too.

I would. I openly admit it.

I wouldn't and I'd probably make fun of the doc too. But then again, I'm a horrible person so best not to do anything I do...

I wonder why he wants the essay? That is nice, though, that the doctor actually is putting some educational thought into your shadowing experience.

When I was shadowing one neurologist, she had me proof-read one of the papers she was working. "Gastrocnemius" was misspelled with an "i" (i.e. sort of like it's pronounced). That makes only two times when I was useful when shadowing, the other time being when I fetched lunch for a radiologist 🙂
