As a health professional, I generally always look up the license of whomever I am working with or refer to etc. It's always interesting the things you learn by going to your states MQA.

If I am going to shadow a D.O. or ask some of the D.O.'s I work with for a letter of recommendation, should I only ask one from those who have a spotless record?

I had an offer from a D.O. for a LoR but when I looked up their license, I saw they lost privileges at a hospital in a state they were also licensed in. They never reported such loss of privileges to the state and were given an official reprimand and fine for failure to report. All of this is on their license for anyone to see.

Will schools look up the license for letter writers? I don't know what the background was for loss of hospital privilege out of state. I know all the patients I send to this person have all had glowing reviews coming back and I have never had a bad interaction with them either.

Curious as to what an ADCOM might do.

If possible I will get a LoR from someone with a spotless record, but it made me think and I wanted to ask the community here.

If you're oversaturated with offers to shadow go right ahead and be picky.

I'm not oversaturated with letter writers.

I'm genuinely curious if ADCOM's will look up a letter writers license and if there are any dings, will that count against the applicant.

Is it our responsibility to look up the license of physicians we are shadowing to make sure there isn't an action taken against them?

That's pretty ballsy. You are way overthinking. Get your letter. You would be surprised at how many physicians out there have "something" on their record.

Umm, no. I wouldn't presume to do that as a pre-med student. I'm just blown away. Your letter is not about them, it's about you. If they are still working where you can get a letter then the licensing board has deemed them ok to practice. WOW.

when i shadow, i look up their house address, the kind of cars they drive, the school their kids attend, and i run a background check. i also scout out their house to see which tree shows the best view of their bedroom. this is a great icebreaker when you get started.

No. Your responsibility is to shadow to learn about the profession. What the physician has done in the past is none of your concern.

Nothing to get offended about. I'm asking an honest question, nothing of which is meant to be offensive to physicians. This was a topic I was thinking about and thought this forum would be a good resource to ask.

How does one view the "dings" on someones medical license?

Do it and get the letter. Dont make it harder on yourself.

I say bring it up. 🙂 would make for awesome conversation I'm sure.. 👍

Just make sure your letter isn't from that one forensic pathologist who got caught selling human bones to the black market and you should be o.k.

You don't even bother to run a history on the wife?

That seems a wee bit neurotic. If a doctor has offered to write you a letter its because they believe can write you a good one. I know for a fact that a glowing letter from a physician can truly set your application apart (it certainly helped mine). Don't look a gift horse in the mouth especially if you don't know the story behind the smudge on this physicians record.
