Shadowing Question

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
im gonna go with dental. I can see how its iffy b/c its surgery, but its a specialty within dentistry, is it not? I dont see why that would count for shadowing a physician. Better just to shadow a DO or an MD

Does shadowing an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon count as shadowing for medical schools or more towards dental schools or both?

I believe that an oral and maxillofacial surgeon has both a dental and a medical degree... I always thought that was pretty cool. I would say it would probably count for both!

i think im in the same situation, well sort of... i been workin for an optometrist for 2 years now should list that as a clinical shadowing experience or just a working experience?

The guys that I've known in this boat at DMD/MDs. They are a rare breed, mine told me he was one of 30 in the US or one of 300. Can't recall. Anyway, I think this is seriously clinical as far as experiences go.

Not everything comes down to what the adcom might make of it. As long as you are loving the experience, and can explain why, I say stick with it. If not, move on.

Just my .02.

An OD is not a physician-think about it this way: through your experience, can you talk about what you learned about a day in the life of a doctor?

Since you weren't shadowing a doctor (in the sense of what medical schools think of as a doctor) then I would just keep it as an EC. Saying it's clinical is likely to invoke questions on why you aren't going the OD route.

And shadowing an oral surgeon definitely counts as medical shadowing. Even if they only have a DDS or DMD they still get a substantial amount of medical training.
