So I got an MD to shadow. He's a really cool doctor who I've known professionally for over 2 years. I have even been the nurse of his wife when she had her knee replaced and again when she had her hip replaced so his wife likes me too. I've pretty much been informally shadowing him whenever he comes to the facility where i work to see his patients, but how long would be long enough to formally shadow him before I could get a letter of rec from him?

I think you are fine now.

Depends on the doc and your relationship. I had a doctor I knew write me a letter and never formally shadowed her. It's all about the relationship.
