What is the difference between shadowing or volunteering for a dentist?

As a graduating senior, I'm seriously considering spending a couple weeks of my summer volunteering for my local dentist/orthodontist.

I noticed that a lot of people were talking about "shadowing" a dentist, an ortho or a perio, etc when they were talking about their summer experiences, and yet no one said anything about volunteering

Am I a total noob for not knowing the difference, or what @_@?

You may be volunteering (helping out at a dental office by cleaning, sterilizing, etc) but helping out at a dental office might not count as community service (unless it's a nonprofit clinic). Volunteering at a hospital or somewhere else would count as community service if you are...serving the community.

Volunteering for the dentist means working at the office doing scut work for no pay.

Shadowing the dentist means standing over his/her shoulder while they work on patients.

Like he said. You cant really count it as "volunteer" work just because you did menial labor there, unless its some kind of non profit clinic. you will just put that you shadowed, and in the are of what you did/saw you can put down the things you helped with.
