Hi,

I just finished my first pre-requisite class and I am taking Bio 2 and Chem 2 next semester. I havent started shadowing or volunteering yet because I wanted to get a feel for science classes and I think want to start over christmas break. I plan on applying in 2015.

Can anyone inform me what a safe number of hours of volunteering and shadowing would be?

My overall GPA will be around a 3.4 and I think its safe to say that my science GPA will be nothing less than a 3.5.

Thanks for any input

For shadowing they say around 50.. as for volunteering, just make sure its over a big period of time, I think volunteering for a year with 200 hours looks better than 3 months with 200 hours. They want to see that you can be committed to something so pick a few volunteer/research opportunities and try to get in a least 7+ months with them. As for total amount of hours, not sure there is a magic number but I'd say over 400 hours total of all your volunteer work should be good. You have plenty of time to rack up hours so start soon!

I agree, somewhere in the ballpark of 50 hours should give you time to see a physician's regular duties, and pick up some unique experiences.
