Shadowing

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
At the school I was at (OSU) they had really stringent rules about shadowing. Like, you could only shadow for one day. But it's about connections. I met a doctor who introduced me to a surgeon and that is how I got my shadowing experience. See if you know any family friends or even someone who works in a hospital. If you do research you can ask your PI for advice as well.

I go to OSU too! Once I found out about those rules I was pissed. But like you said, I got connected through my PI and have sorta skipped past those restrictions.

Identical experience. But once you get past the red tape, the docs don't care about the one time only thing - I just scheduled shadowing with their individual secretaries and nobody prevented me from shadowing the same doc multiple times.

Basically, avoid dealing with the bureaucracy of the medical center as much as possible. They're the ones that will get on your case.

I want to try to shadow one too! I am currently shadowing a cardiologist . I love it so much . She has her own office and it connects to a hospital . I got to bring back patients , take their weights and I did my first EKG. I also got to watch the ultra sound of a heart . Very interesting day lol

I got to watch 3 open heart surgeries the past couple days, pretty awesome experience. Stood right behind the head with the cRNA. Definitely long surgeries and the way they use the heart-lung machine is very interesting. Great time though, I feel very grateful to be able to watch that. I was amazed at how relaxed the atmosphere in the OR was. Mainly elective surgeries and good surgical candidates so that helps I imagine.

Random note:
I shadowed a retired Orthopedic surgeon at a free clinic fairly recently, and he let me pre-clean the site of cortisone injection and spray the numbing spray while he did it. I mentioned this on my app is fairly general bullet point fashion, is this going to be an issue? I wouldn't think such little things would qualify as crossing boundaries on what I was allowed to do, but I didn't really think about it before I submitted. It was literally just him giving a shot.
