For the purposes of shadowing, do I need to follow a specific doctor around for his shift or will it work if I just am in a unit following a couple of CRNAs that do anesthesiology? Do the people I follow need to be MD status and not just a CRNA? When medical schools look for shadowing, do they want you to have followed an actual doctor alone and not anyone other than someone of MD or DO status (depending on what type of school you're applying to)?

In my opinion, shadowing for med school is more about clinical exposure and experiencing a physician's actual day-to-day schedule, and less about fulfilling a quota.

Alright. I only ask because I went to shadow an anesthesiologist last November with the expectation that I would be actually shadowing him for the day, but he kind of just gave me to the CRNAs and I went with a couple of them for a few hours each. I still got clinical exposure this way but didn't specifically shadow the anesthesiologist that day. I suppose this would count as clinical exposure but not shadowing, so I am concerned.

I think that's fine. You can definitely learn a ton from CRNA's. If I recall, part of the process of becoming one involves several years of nursing experience with substantial time in critical care required, so they tend to have a unique perspective.

You don't have to explicitly set up shadowing with a doctor to get your clinical experience.

Sounds good! Yeah, the CRNAs I went with were very knowledgable and it was good exposure to be with them.
