Ok, I know this question may seem a little foolish, 🙁 but how will the Dental schools you apply to know the numer of hours you've shadowed/volunteered? Do you complete a resume? But how will they know you are being 100% truthful?

It might be something like this:

The ADA has close ties to the NSA. They actually receive a detailed breakdown of your whereabouts and your activities. This is then cross referenced with the claims you make on your application.

Jokes aside, shadowing is more for the student. Going to dental school is a big commitment so I think its a favor to the students to make sure they know what they are getting themselves into.

I guess people could fudge their numbers and get away with it. However, they will really just be hurting themselves.

With that said some of the newer schools that seem to have lower gpa/dat averages seem to appreciate really large amounts of dental experiences (the kind of hours you get working full time in a dental office, not just shadowing).

You self-input the amount of hours on the AADSAS application along with a short description of the activities participated in.

As for proof, some ask for a letter of evaluation from a dentist. As for the ones that don't, they don't have a way of actually knowing the truth unless they actually contact the dentist which is unlikely.

With the number of applicants these days, I'm almost certain that it's based on honor code. Like mentioned above, it's more for yourself to really get a first-hand observational experience to really confirm that this is what you want your lifelong career to be. It won't really make or break your application (aside from some schools that now seem to stipulate a minimum required hours).

You are applying to a professional school. If you can't be truthful, you don't belong. Honesty is expected.

If you tell them you've done 40,000,000 shadowing hours at 74 different dental offices they might be suspicious. If you tell them you have 60 hours at 3 dental offices and can back that claim up via the interview, what reason do they have to doubt you? 😱

Thanks guys, and I wasn't planning on lying. I was just concerned that I wouldn't know how to record the number of shadowing hours that I've done.
