Hi everyone,

I was wondering, how much does the specialty of the dentist shadow matter? I haven't shadowed a general dentist, but only OMFS and orthodontists. I am planning on shadowing a general dentist this summer, but I will be applying in June.

Any thoughts?

Thank you! 🙂

Try to hit up some GP. Whether that's what you want to do or not, you at least have to pass through 'GP training' for 4 years to get there. I'm not going to check all of them, but I have indeed seen a few FAQs for schools that specifically state a preference for some GP action.

I had this problem while applying. I shadowed 3 specialists and no GPs before submitting my application.

I submitted my application in July and starting shadowing a GP in August. After shadowing for a month, I got a letter from the GP stating the time frame and total hours of the shadowing. Then I called up each school to let them know of the update and the emailed the letter to them.

GP shadowing > specialist shadowing.

Hm...I was thinking of shadowing a general dentist all throughout June and then submitting my application in late June/early July. Can you just email the letter to the schools? For example, I want to apply to Tufts but do not have a letter from a general dentist...so if I just email them an attached letter, is that okay?

in the ADEA guide to dental schools 2011, Baylor prefers that 50 hours from a general dentist.
