I don't think there is anything wrong with telling them that you like being a pharmacist because of the hours and work schedule. They are real reasons!!! I'd find a personal statement like that more interesting than one that tells me how much that person wants to help others. Who doesn't know that you're in it because you want to help?? Who doesn't know that you're interested in drugs and their effect on the bodies? Being a pharmacist is not the way only way you can help patients. Being a nurse's assistant also helps patients!! I find it more refreshing and very honest to see other reasons behind it.

i don't! if you want to be a pharmacist, you better have a better reason then it has good hours and pay. The hours should not be a reason you tell an admission committee. Besides there are better, more important reasons why pharmacy as opposed to being a doc, dentist, nurse or even a waitress/waitor. They are all helping people but they are unique from each other, why and how?
someone giving me those reasons is not passionate about what they are going to do. it seems like it is only 2nd best, that they rather be a doctor. If they wanted to be a doctor, why are you applying to pharmacy? If they are not passionate, why would i want them in my school. Someone who is passionate will give better patient care, grades only mean so much.

The hours and the pay should not be the main reason to tell the committee, but they are regardless, good reasons. From what I see on this site, most people's reasons are to help patients and they have the thirst for understanding how the drugs work inside the bodies (which I have already stated in my previous post) or some other personal experiences that have led them to this career. They are all good reasons. What is your real reason Quicksilver?? If after you graduate, you only make $30K, would you still do it?? Of course you would since you're so passionate about it.

Not everybody is born with the passion to know what they want to do in life. Many of us have to go out there and search for it with the help of friends and family members, and while we do that, we look in a profession that can help us have better lives while helping others (that's the rewarding part of it). Besides all those reasons, I like being a pharmacist because it will allow me to live anywhere in the US and be able to find a job. I also like being able to give my (future) children the things that I never had.

I challenge anyone on these forums to pursue pharmacy, graduate, incur huge financial debt, and give 2/3 of their income to charitable organizations because they are passionate about pharmacy.

Just because I love playing video games, it doesn't mean I will be a beta tester for EA Games in Orlando making $8.00 per hour.

Let's not kid ourselves with altruistic grandeur.

Pharmacy encompasses the health sciences into a flexible, portable, and well paid profession.

You know, your last sentence was much like my answer to the "Why pharmacy?" question during my interview. Anyway, I digress....🙂

I agree that we shouldn't pressure ourselves into thinking that one must be mega-altruistic among people by telling them that money isn't a factor in choosing pharmacy or any other health care profession. If pharmacy paid only $30,000 a year for the same work load, I wouldn't pursue the profession. That wouldn't mean that I don't have a passion for helping people. The fact of the matter is, we all need money to support ourselves in this country and many of us wants the financial security that doesn't have us living paycheck-to-paycheck and/or worrying about being laid off.

BB,

Up until now, they've only banned your nicks, but I think they can block your IP too...heheh...so calm down hon

i'm not saying we need to take a page from mother theresa here but what i am saying is they do not want to hear you say that sort of stuff. Anytime money comes up, you should be thinking that even though medical professions have its many privlidges, there are many responsibilities tied to that privlidge.

i am just saying i don't think a career pharmacist, one who is educating pharmacists wants to hear that their profession was 2nd best, just because hours and pay. Yeah they are part of the job, but really is that the only satisfaction you will have for being a pharmacist? I really do not think this should be rocket science. This board has been helpful to me but i am surprised that people are pursuing this field for those reasons. There are people who have weaker stats then you who have a better idea of what pharmacy is about, if you feel that way maybe you should let someone else have your spot.

Who is saying that pharmacy profession is the 2nd best?? NOBODY!!! Hours and pay are good reasons, period!! By the way, the hours aren't that great either. My family doctor sets his own hours and he works 4 days a week. I'm gonna tell you one of my reasons: I'm afraid of blood...there!! So I can't be a doctor nor a nurse. But I still like to work with patients, and  pharmacy seems to fit!!

Since we have no clue what pharmacy is all about, would you care to tell us Quiksilver?

2. not chosing med field cause it will take me for ever to be a doc and my husband will get annoyed ...
3. i wanna give time to my kids(when i have them) but in med i will be too busy
ok

This is where i am directing my opinion from. THESE STATEMENTS! To me, these are not good reasons to put on an application. In fact, like i said before, pharmacy sounds like a second choice from reason number 2 above. Honesty is the best policy but seriously, a person on the admissions committee might rather take in someone else who has an altruistic reason, it shows a little more understanding about pharmacy.

Last time i check the pharmacist i work for does not have regular hours and works weekends regularly. Its not a rose garden. however i have heard people giving reasons of the hours being better to manage and pay is good during interviews, and it really didnt work out very well for them. Use some common sense, you can believe whatever you want to, but think about what they want to hear.

i don't need to give you my reasons either, they are personal and are accordingly in my personal statement. I think they are excellent reasons and aren't "altruistic" in nature. Maybe take a closer look at this forum. The ideas are plenty.

Embrace cultural diversity. You will collaborate with many professionals from many cultures where English is not even their 2nd or 3rd language. Being a pharmacist takes compassion which many of you lack. I was mortified at the mean responses and had to register to respond. I've been a pharmacist for 25 years and have never encountered this type of abuse towards people.
