I am searching for someone who is interested in doing a shared
residency, preferrably in the NJ/NY or Lehigh Valley are. A shared
residency is when two partners agree to each attend residency half time,
accepting half the pay, and extending the time until graduation.
This could be done for the entire residency, for the intern year
only, or for some combination thereof. Possibilities for time
sharing include working every other day, 3 days on - 3 days off,
1 week on - 1 week off, 1 month on - 1 month off, or any combination.
Calls can be split equally. Maternity leave or other obligations
that require extended time off can be covered by the "on" partner,
relieve the pressure to take only a 6 or 8 week leave.

This is a huge advantage for anyone with family obligations,
anyone who might plan to have children during residency, or
anyone who is just interested in keeping their sanity during residency.

Initial contact has already been made with many schools in the
area who are very interested. A shared resident pair is currently
working in the Lehigh Valley area, and both the program and the
residents are extremely happy with the arrangement.

Please email me right away if this possibility interests you!

Thanks,
Eliza Thornton

Is working half time months allowed in FP? I know in IM, Peds, and EM part-time residencies are allowed, but one must work a full month to get credit. So you can work every other month but not every other day or week. I would think that swapping in increments under a week (and I'd really say under a month) would destroy patient continuity and also make your educational process seem fragmented.

The current shared resident pair working at Lehigh Valley FP is doing a
3-day on 3-day off schedule for child care reasons and it is working out
beautifully for everyone involved. The program is extremely happy
with the work of the residents. Please email me or private message
me if this is of interest to anyone!

I'm interested- already graduated from med school, but am currently taking some time off to stay home with my 2 kids. I'm most interested in IM, but would switch fields if I found the right situation.
I've been wondering how in the world I'm ever going to do residency because I can't see myself working anything close to 80-hour weeks. I'm thrilled to hear of these opportunities- please share any info you have. Thanks!

BTW this is not my correct log-in name- somehow this computer is logged in under this name and I'm not able to sign on with my username. I will try to re-register from another computer.

would you complete residency in 3 years, or 6 years?

even though it's called 'part time', i think most residents in these programs end up working 60-75% effort, and they end up finishing in 4.5 years

Hi Abbeydesert! Thanks for your interest - please email me or private
message me with your email address, and we can talk further. My email
is [email protected].

As far as how much you share and how long that makes the residency -
it is up to you, your partner, and the program to work out a schedule that
makes everyone happy :)
