1) Why is it called a "shelf" exam?

2) My school requires a 65% score on shelf exam to get "honors." Is 65% really hard to get?

3) How difficult in general are these exams? ARe they similar to Step I with a more limited scope? Or are the questions harder than Step I?

4) Do these shelf exams test on biochemistry minutiae like Step I? Or is it more clinical based?

5) Where can I find/buy old shelf exams? Does NBME sell them?

You must go to a powder-puff school, per #2 above.

If you think the Step I tests biochemistry "minutiae," then we have vastly different connotations of the word.

Shelf exams during the third year (which is the forum in which you've posted), are very clinically relevant and a bit more nit-picky than the Step II.

#2 .....wow For IM at our school you need to be in the 90th percentile or higher to get an A. 65% does everyone have a 4.0 at you school?

You care to put your money where your mouth is?

I tell you what. Lets have an online SDN contest. I will post proof of my school of attendance, and we'll have an SDN straw poll. We'll ask if my school is "powder-puff" or not.

$5000 says I win.

Come on big man, lets see you back up your flamebait for once.

That 65% threshold does not GUARANTEE honors, it just makes you eligible for it. You still have to get great evaluations.

Wow. Is that $5,000 in student loan money?

Sure, I'll take the bet.

🙂

Fine then lets do it.

I will post the following on a website and scan them in and attach the files to a thread:

1) Registrar's letter confirming attendance
2) Transcript
3) Picture of ID card
4) Acceptance letter

I'm going to black out my name to preserve anonymity; if this isnt good enough I will select a willing SDN moderator volunteer and mail copies of the documents to them.

Then I'll start a new poll.

Rules:

1) Poll question will be: "Is School X a powder-puff school?"
2) To vote, you have to write a post on the thread and write YES or NO, to provide transparency.
3) Only posters eligible to vote are those who registered BEFORE May 2006
4) No duplicate IP addresses for voters
5) Poll stays open for 2 weeks

After that time, we'll count the votes.

BTW, I use PayPal or you can mail me a check.

MacGyver,

When you say "65%" did you mean a raw score of 65 (not a percentage score by the way) or a score at the 65th percentile? There is a huge difference between the two. A raw score of 65 is usually in the bottom quartile. A misunderstanding of what you really meant could explain some of these comments.

You know, M-3, I really do hope you go to a great school -- you have OBVIOUSLY sacrificed a great deal of partying and socialization to get there.

I have honestly never seen a more overtly insecure and overcompensating post in my entire life.

Your signature is very telling, as are your years of membership prior to medical school even starting.

Do you have any clue how many people are laughing at you right now?????

Here's to knowing how to push YOUR buttons.

🙂

macgyver: you are a tool.

This is embarassing.

You guys are going to be doctors soon. Please at least try to act grown up in public.

(He really posted a scan of his Step I score....??? )

It's funny that everyone except the insecure know that posturing like that is a glaring sign of insecurity.

Thread closed.

No need for this sort of thing.

In the future MacGyver, don't start trouble and then ask me to close the thread when someone says something you don't like.
