I recently read in an article that some shelters will repay vet school loans for as long as the veterinarian works at that shelter. I have never heard of any shelters doing this. Does anyone know how commonly this occurs - is it very rare or an up-and-coming occurrence?

I very much doubt that a shelter itself would repay loans - they do not have that kind of money. However, I have heard of some states (don't know which, sorry) having loan forgiveness programs if you work in nonprofit for a certain amount of years.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It'd be near-impossible for most shelters to shell out 100k-250k to hire a new vet...

Thanks for the replies. I read this in Animal Sheltering magazine, in an article about how shelters and shelter vets can find good matches with one another. The article did indicate that the shelters themselves don't necessarily pay directly for the loans, but that they obtain grants that will cover that expense. And the shelters do not outright pay back 150-200k in loans, but rather will pay the monthly loan payments for as long as that person is working there.

Like I said, I haven't heard of this either, but Animal Sheltering is a very reputable magazine so I am wondering where these shelters are that do this?! And I am also hoping that this is a sign that this will become more common in the future as recognition of shelter medicine as a specialty rises.

Wow, sign me up! I'm interested in shelter medicine!

Just ressurecting an old thread. Does anyone have any more information on whether shelter veterinarians are eligible for the 10 public service loan forgiveness program? Thanks!😀

My understanding is that the public service loan forgiveness program applies to all 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations- and that you don't have to work 10 *consecutive* years for nonprofits, but can work for 10 cumulative years at nonprofits and still qualify. i.e. you can work 5 years for a nonprofit, then 5 years at a for-profit, then 5 more years at a nonprofit and have the remainder of your loans forgiven.
