Hi all,

I was recently asked if I'd like to participate in an apprenticeship program to become certified as a behavioral trainer as well as obedience trainer for canines. I'm accepting the opportunity for the experience regardless, my question is if this counts towards animal experience? I'm assuming as much but I'm wondering if its something that looks great on an application for vet schools (I wont be applying until 2016), or if its just an added experience?

Thanks all!

As far as I know, you could count being a behavioral trainer as animal experience (I know I was able obtain animal experience as a obedience trainer/leader in 4-H). However, you should accept the program if you want to do it and think you will have fun with it, not because you think it will look good on your application. Try to remember that experiences aren't just boxes to be checked off- you should enjoy it as well.

Thanks for the reply! Im accepting it because I would love it 🙂 ive been taking my dogs there for about a year and they asked if id be interested because theyre trying to set up a program for all deaf dog owners (im a sign language interpreter) so they wanted to see if id be interested.

It would be animal experience. It only counts as veterinary experience if you're working with a veterinarian. The VMCAS gives a pretty thorough explanation of what defines each category in their application instructions, so if you're unsure of where to put things that's always a good place to check.

Sounds like a great experience, especially since it's something you're excited about. You could definitely include it as animal experience on your VMCAS application. If you don't have much veterinary experience, you might also consider shadowing a vet, volunteering, etc. to start gaining vet hours as well.
