starting job tomorrow. Is it normal to go without a T- shirt/undershirt while wearing scrubs in the hospital?

I have no preference either way but I suppose ill go under-shirtless if its acceptable.

I never wear an under-shirt.

It's really personal preference. I've shadowed and seen docs wears scrubs both ways.

I'm a volunteer in a hospital and part of our "uniform" specifies that we shall wear the undershirt along with the scrub top.

I have a sleeve I use to cover tattoos on my upper arm. Most people I know of with ink do the same or wear an undershirt. I also know plenty of doctors who swear against undershirts. I guess it's a matter of personal preference. Since I prefer being cool rather than warm, I'd rather not wear anything underneath, but my desire to look professional tends to win.

with @gyngyn 's blessing im bringing the gunshow tomorrow

No undershirt with a thin gold rope necklace and ample chest hair should do (male).
An attending I worked with seriously dressed like that, chest hair and everything.

Where I worked, a majority of staff did not wear undershirts. Also, some people wear long sleeves underneath but that may or may not be allowed based on your hospital's dress code.

I have seen some OR codes that expressly forbid wearing anything under

this is something I think people care more about if they have a lot of chest hair that will show, they have breasts they don't want to show too much of if they bend over, or they get cold/sweaty

some of it might be cultural

some places it gave me the impression that it was seen as "self expression" or being "colorful" and looked less uniform/professional, so it would be disallowed (usually in that case you could find some written rules somewhere, almost every code I've seen has said something about not getting too wild with bright neon colors or having slogans/graphics etc at minimum)

other places it would almost seem like you were "naked" without one
(some residents take pleasure in wearing shirts that are otherwise against code, like with slogans or trademarked stuff (carebears anyone?) that couldn't be easily seen under their scrubs. I don't suggest that med students get "cute" like this)

don't worry about it, you can't go wrong with scrubs only your first day
(if you are sure it's a scrubs appropriate day, only assume scrubs are OK if you are going to be in an OR or doing a day of sterile procedures - when in doubt, wear clinic appropriate attire but have scrubs with you, otherwise you need to be sure what the policy is, most places you can wear scrubs on long call days and on others YOU CAN'T, so always ask about rules on wearing scrubs if you are outside the OR, even some EDs don't allow it!!)

I would only wear a shirt for my own comfort or for the rules

(now I realize for all that I did to keep my ladies under control I was giving a free show every long call day. oh well, at least I never went afoul the dress code on purpose)

Take the shirt with you and clarify what the dress code is when you get there. If you're in the ED/ICU/non-sterile area it's likely that it doesn't matter. If you'll be in an OR or sterile area, there might be stricter rules. Technically for sterile areas, we could wear whatever we wanted under scrubs as long as the scrubs completely covered it. So if someone wanted an undershirt, they had to wear a short sleeve v-neck that would be completely covered by the scrub top.

You can never go wrong with wearing a solid white tee under your scrubs.

Keep in mind - some hospitals do not permit any undergarments showing from under the scrubs. Just wear a T shirt that fits accordingly 🙂

Wear an undershirt/underwear and you won't ever have to wash your scrubs (currently on week 6 myself)
You don't wash scrubs, you just swap them for new ones. Of course if you don't wear underclothes it could be a bit embarrassing/chilly at the scrub machine if it's in a public area. The whole Seinfeld shrinkage issue comes into play. 🙂

I only wear a t-shirt if its cold outside or generally cold inside.

I wear an undershirt under everything I wear, including scrubs.

The only time I wore an undershirt was when I was an intern doing nights in the ICU, so I usually wasn't wearing my white coat to keep warm.

Now I'm a PM&R resident, so I only wear scrubs on weekend call and if I get called in during the middle of the night. Quick and easy. I don't wear an undershirt because it feels too hot and I'm just not a fan of the layering look/feel. I bought a pair of nicer/thicker scrubs--I hate hospital-provided scrubs--makes me feel like I'm not wearing any pants.

I bought dark green ones because I like green and thought they looked nice. Now if I'm not wearing my white coat everything thinks I'm with RT.

And they are made to fit a square body shape! Haha 🙂

Hey uh which hospital are you at? Just wondering

I've heard guys say this before about that cheap flimsy hospital material.
Often they're just the ones I want to see in the hospital-provided scrubs. 😛
Bonus points if you go commando under them.

OMG, this reminds me of a post a few years ago from a guy who hated the material of the scrubs because when he went to the bathroom that last little dribble after he finished would leave a huge wet spot on the front of his scrub pants. God, that was a funny thread. 😀

Toutie, a thread from a few years ago? you signed up a year ago!

It's hilarious because I remember reading the same thing!

I'm a scribe. I don't have a high enough pay grade to use the ScrubEx.

I'm a CNA and I wear a tank under mine. But I'm also kinda boogie cause I have hand sewn scrubs by my mom which fits me perfectly lmao. Our hospital provides it to all staff actually, but being super small frame and thin, I swim in a size small.
