I was talking to a professor at the David Geffen School of medicine, here at UCLA and he told me that the average MCAT for last years accepted applicants was 28!!!!!
i was tooo numb to even ask him again, if what he said was true!
how the hell is that possible for UCLA, i thought it was the hardest med school to get into in california with an outrageous average MCAT and GPA. i was thinking of the average to be around 32.
i still dont know how to react to thius professor's statement...because sometimes professors are dazed too....but just in case...has anyone heard that before??

I think the professor was mistaken.

i know someone who got in with a 24

It used to be but people have been getting in with those scores lately!

Actually, the average MCAT of my class is 32. (This was disclosed to us during orientation week.)

Last year I volunteered to help teach the UCLA M1s how to take vital signs and it seems as though lately they're putting a lot of emphasis on diversifying - racially, socially, and also regarding diverse ages and non-trad student. I don't know if the AdCom has an official stance on this, but everyone I met deviated from the "white, upper-middle-class, straight-out-of-undergrad" cookie cutter in at least one major way. As far as avg. MCAT scores, though? Check your MSAR. I think it's still pretty high.

thats what i thought....ok...then the professor must definitely have been in a daze. UCLA's average MCAT can NEVER be a 28. Anyways, its very encouraging to know that they are admitting people from diverse back grounds.!!

🙂

You are right. The people in the class of 2009 are quite diverse, and largely non-traditional. I have only met a handful who came to UCLA straight from college. It's awesome to meet peple from so many different backgrounds. While the class is mostly comprised of CA blood, there is also a bunch of out-of-staters, this year. Hmm ... what else? Any other questions? I'm happy to help and give advice. I love UCLA. 🙂

Would it be possible that it was the average MCAT for all matriculants from UCLA undergrad? That would make it the same number as the over all acceptances too.

i am a bruin and i love UCLA too. but it seems like a very far fetched dream to get a medical degree from here. i dont think i will make it, but nevertheless, i have enjoyed every bit of time i have spent at the university and its hospital. i really cherish it and congratulate all the people who have gotten accepted this year!!!
😀

My buddy got into a pretty good program there (where they make rotations through needy areas such as Compton, etc.). He got a 26 on the MCAT.

But he also was URM..

Must've paid an ambulance chaser. 😉

Ok, question for fellow Bruin Undergrads -
Would you REALLY stay in Westwood for another 4 years if UCLA took you for their MD program?
Maybe I'm just crazy, but it's close the the bottom of my list. Cost of living, psychopathic Los Angelinos, the smog, and the traffic are all getting pretty close to driving me insane. Yes, UCLA is a fantastic program and I'd be thrilled to get to work/learn in the new Reagan hospital, but is it enough to convince me to put up with 4 more years here?
VERY tough call.
What do you guys think?

thats the drew program. i got in myself, and im "ORM".

Do the students in the Drew program take classes in the same buildings as the "regular" UCLA med students?

How do they differ?

Sorry, that's the Drew program! And it is no longer a good program!

MB in SD,

For the first two years, the Drew students take classes with the regular UCLA students. We're indistinguishable. I could probably only identify 5 out of 24 Drew students. 🙂 For year three (the start of clinical rotations), the Drew students do their rotations at Drew hospital. The regular UCLA students do rotations at places like Harbor, Cedars Sinai, and the UCLA medical center. Of note, at the start of year three, the class "gains" the 24 students in the UCR/UCLA program, so the class size stays the same, even after the Drew people leave.

Yeah, Drew hospital is having big problems right now. They're working really hard to fix it. It's sad because the patients once served by Drew now have to travel to places really far away, like Cedars, to get care. Just thought I'd say that if something "bad" were ever to happen to Drew hospital (i.e., it became unsuitable for clinical rotations), the Drew students would most likely complete their rotations at Harbor-UCLA, another hospital that is targeted to the underserved community.

MSAR 2006-2007 says that the average accepted applicant to ucla had 10V, 12P, 12B = 34

but as tacrum pointed out earlier these are the stats of those accepted, not matriculating

I also went to UCLA. In fact, I was there too long. Anyways, I would totally go there again. I love UCLA and Westwood. To live in LA, you shouldn't mind to wait in the traffic and should calculate traffic hours into your schedule. However, I wouldn't live around UCLA. Those landlords take advantage of the fact there is price ceiling for apt rent. Rent goes up every year. How much is it now? $2,600/ 2 bedrooms? Just guessing. When I left Westwood 2 years ago, the rent was already $2000-$2,400/2 bedrooms. I would move to Culver City and commute to UCLA. I did that for two years, it wasn't bad at all. Well...let's not start with the parking situation on campus. Argh... However, UCLA is still a good school.

Does anyone know what the stats are for the UCLA Drew program? Or arey they included in those listed in the MSAR under UCLA?

Thanks in advance!! 🙂
