I have seen a couple of threads about clothing for shadowing in the ED but not much specifically about shoes for women. The doctor I am shadowing told me business casual is fine since I don't have scrubs. She told me to wear comfy, closed-toe shoes. Do comfortable flats (cover toe, leave top of the foot exposed) fit that criteria? I did email her to ask but I am not sure if I'll get in touch with her before tomorrow.

Thanks!

I think that will be okay. I work with doctors in the hospital and I have seen some women wear shoes like that. Also if your pants are more bootleg at the bottom that might help cover your feet more.

I work in the ED (in clinical research) and I see lots of female docs wearing flats (Some even wear heels! Although I don't think I could handle that...). Anything closed-toe should be fine. Sneakers, clogs, flats, etc. I usually wear flats or the birkenstock professional clogs.

I have never seen an EM doc wear heels, that was most likely a non-EM physician.

Also, I usually wear cowboy boots, but tennis shoes are the norm.

When I was volunteering in the MICU I was wearing flashy basketball shoes.... 🤣🤣. When I shadow that will obviously change.. cheap black shoes

don't wear tennis shoes with mesh tops, I learned that the hard way when I got hep c blood on my shoe.

Personally, I wear tennis shoes when I shadow. Even if the attire is business casual, doctors do not mind if you wear tennis shoes. The only comments I've ever gotten on my shoes is that I made the smart choice in choosing to wear tennis shoes.

But I get so many compliments on my burnt-orange nike free colorway! 😍

Nope, definitely an EM doc. But perhaps she's n=1. I, for one, have no idea how she does it.

EDIT: Also, I've never seen anyone in any department wear cowboy boots. Love it.

That sounds like an accident waiting to happen. What does she do when she has to throw in a central line, respond to a major trauma, has to deal with a large, bloody laceration, etc.? Does she have flats that she can switch into, because otherwise she is tap dancing around a bloody mess in her stilettos. Also, I'm assuming she doesn't wear scrubs to work?

Also, cowboy boots are awesome. Comfy, I don't mind if I get blood on them, and most people tend to like the way they look. Where I went to medical school, every single resident and most of the attendings in surgery wore them.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! Looks like I'll go with comfy flats this time around. Probably worth looking into other comfortable shoes...or cowboy boots 😉
