Hey everyone,

I start my first rotation which is surgery in a little over a month. I was wondering what students are wearing in the OR? I have very high arches and need something comfortable that will allow me to stand all day.

Are students wearing tennis shoes that are high quality? I saw in the surgery form the residents talking about Sanita shoes. They were called Dansko originally.

Any tips would be great.

Thanks,

Nick

Most ppl tend to wear tennis shoes or clogs.

I have really high arches as well. I wore my old asics running shoes and added gel inserts. I was comfortable the whole time.

The whole time I was wishing I could wear these...

Closed toe/closed heel sanitas or danskos. They're easy to clean body fluids off of (or not at all), but at the least they won't leak onto your socks. The tops are hard in case objects are dropped onto your feet or OR beds are rolled onto 'em. They'll work well w/ high arches.

Sanitas are manufactured by the original factory that made Danskos. Now Danskos are manufactured in China. Go to Nordstrom Rack - you might find some on sale. Since they're going to be beat to hell, don't pay full price.

Sneakers won't afford you the bodyfluid-proof protection nor the "hard shell" protection.

My only complaint is that you might form weird calluses on the balls of your feet b/c your feet are angled so that your weight is mainly on the ball. They also aren't great if you've injured your ankle.

I essentially did the same thing.

I love my Danskos. Great arch support, and my back never hurts after standing all day. If you pick the right color, you can even wear them with dress pants.

Danskos for sure. You can get them at dansko.com for about $80 vs $125 in the store. I bought my first pair for my surgery rotations and have never worn anything else since.

I wore the same pair everyday for 6 years and they never wear out. Good investment for your back and feet.
