I'm planning on wearing a medium gray suit for residency interviews, and am wondering what kind/color of shoes to get. My intuition says a fairly decent pair of conservative black shoes would be good, but I've heard people mentioning cordovan/maroon/brown shoes as being a solid staple of wardrobe with a gray suit. That seems a bit too "flashy" or "bold", but then again I know very little about mens' fashion.

Anyone have any good input?

Dark brown or black lace-up captoes (perforated or not). Make sure you polish them and you should be good to go.

I prefer brown/cordovan with grey suits, but black would also look good. I would go with black, if that is what you are more comfortable with.

something about the 'clop-clop' of leather soles seems to inspire a notion of competence, imho. We had a cards fellow who wore nice leather shoes everyday- you could always hear him coming👍

I'm no fashion expert either, but I'd probably go for something dark/cordovan like this:

rather than something too light like this:

The lighter ones are a nice touch, but probably not for the more formal and traditional environment of residency interviews. Just my take.

Incidentally, I own the pair of shoes you posted in the second picture (same color, even). I like them quite a bit, but would most definitely not wear them with a suit.

This is more along what I would consider for brown shoes with a medium grey suit...

As long as the shoes aren't a neon color and are in good repair, it won't matter what color they are.

Residency interviews are like med school interviews. Everyone errs on the side of conservative (for good reason) and so everyone ends up dressing pretty much identically. You aren't going to impress any program with your outfit (and you shouldn't try). As long as you look identical-enough, you're golden.

Dark brown shoes can go with anything...you can never go wrong with a nice pair of brown shoes with a brown belt to match with.

I own these shoes and plan on wearing them with my suit (which is gray, incidentally). I've owned them for many years, but only just polished them the first time the other day. They're a pair of Nunn Bush cap toe oxfords, and they have some wear and tear, but do they look decent enough to wear to on interviews with a brand new suit?

Jesus Christ.

Just you wait until it's your turn. When you're looking at other people getting ready for interviews, you laugh at their neuroticism. When it's your turn, though, I can pretty much guarantee that you'll be calling every female friend you know and asking, "Does this belt go with these shoes?!?!?!"

😛

OP - as ZagDoc said, don't worry too much. Unless you wear something that REALLY stands out, no one really notices what you wear. I would just avoid zoot suits, cowboy boots, Danskos, loud plaid, or excessive jewelry (all of which I have seen at residency interviews). Strange colors (i.e. lilac, lavender, neon) should be avoided. The residents at my school still talked negatively about an applicant who wore a lavender plaid suit, two years later.

Basically, if you were to wear it to a wedding and people would say, "My, how...interesting," don't wear it to a residency interview.

Dude, if I may, you have to dress the part to get the part. I started reading Esquire and GQ years ago and some of the wardrobe and grooming articles have served me well. You don't want to look too flashy or trendy. Understated elegance. That's the way to go. Interviewers size you up in several ways within a few seconds, the gaze goes from head to toes, and trust this stranger on the internet on this one: People look at three things you're shoes, you're spouse(or lack thereof) and the way you present yourself (speech-it's pitch, tone, cadence, etc.) - If you aren't polished you aren't going to get the position. Shoes must be comfortable and despite a color clash, if your shoes feel crappy you'll be feelin' it-that shows-bit time. Splurge on some good shoes. Yep. Good shoes, you'll feel good and whoever's interviewing you will say: Now that's someone who's sensible. As far as the dress the part thing goes: I tried it when applying for an astronaut job - It didn't work out. I did get into med school and thanks to paying attention to personal grooming managed to do well throughout my career, after med school, residency and private practice. The old dress for success bit? I used to think it was B.S., but; it serves you well down the road,
