Hi -

What a great forum! I'm just in the initial stages of thinking about a doctoral program and heading toward an ultimate goal of private practice as a licensed Psychologist. I have an MA in Community Psych. from a regionally accredited University (Alaska at Fairbanks).

1 - Are there more forums like this one on the web? I want to find all the resources I can.

2 - Will any APA accredited PsyD or PhD programs allow me to shorten the path to graduation because of my Master's?

3 - I have looked at a few expensive PsyD options. Can you recommend any programs that are likely to help me out financially?

Thanks.

About the forums, the only one I've found is behavior.net. It has different forums related to psychology (adlerian, creative therapy, etc). It is not as good as this one, but I dont know of any other forum related to psychology.

About your other questions, Im sorry I cant answer, I dont know a lot about options outside my area. Im sure you'll receive the info that you need in this forum, someone will answer very soon 😉

Good luck! 🙂

Welcome 🙂

I would contact programs directly to find out whether they would accept your MA or not....If you want to get funded for your PhD, be prepared to do extensive research and write research proposals....I'm Canadian so I don't know much about US funding....

You may have an edge in terms of research (if your advisor in a PhD program conducts research in a related area), but you still need to complete clinical practica and a dissertation. In my experience, most PhD programs in clinical psychology DO NOT allow one to have their MA requirement waived prior to matriculation. I think funding has something to do with it, as most programs fund each clinical PhD student for five years. Best advice is to check with individual programs. Make sure you describe your role in conceptualizing, conducting, and writing up your study, and how your work is clinically-relevant. It's definitely worth a shot. My guess is that the "diploma mill" PhD/PsyD programs will not allow it, and maybe 1 or 2 other university-based programs may consider it.

If you don't get credit for your MA you could at least try to get credit for your coursework, particularly in stats and research methods. If your current school is not APA accredited that may be more difficult. I guess if your final goal is private practice you could think about a master's in social work which would take two years at most...

Good point. You may also want to consider programs that offer a Master's degree in Public Health (MPH) along with a Master's in Social Work (MSW). Your background in community psychology is unique, and should make you competitive for some of the top combined programs. This combination of degrees, in my experience, equips you with research and clinical skills that are valuable and often sought after in today's job market.

Take a look at these job listings:

The book tells you what percentage of applicants accepted at clinical and counseling psychology programs had master's degrees, as part of each entry. it includes PsyD's. In general its a highly rated book, but I would stop by a book store or library to flip through it before you buy it.
