My gpa is 3.89, I have 1 1/2 classes left and I graduate. I was accepted into the National Technical Honors Society this summer. My question is do I need to apply to DO schools as well as MD? I really want to get into MD...... I will be taking the MCAT in May 2013.

In the future this is perfect for the What Are My Chances section, but no issue.

With a GPA that good You probably will not have to apply DO. You'll get your MCAT back in time to still apply DO relatively early if it is somehow horrendous. Now this is all assuming your ECs are solid.

Thank you for your response. I assume ECs stands for extra curricular (sorry, new to the abbreviation)... ?
Anyway if so, I have volunteer work at my local er, shadowed a primary care, and shadowed a ob/gyn. I also have red cross volunteer work. Additionally, live in a rural area and there are not many drs or clinics that will allow shadowing, sadly.

These look good. Make sure some are meaningful experiences. You have a great GPA. Just knock the MCAT out of the park and I'm sure you won't have to apply to DO schools.

Unless you get below a 29 on your MCAT ypu will be fine for MD

I think it's all relative and like others have stated, it's too early to tell.

Some people apply to DO because of low stats, others apply because of the proximity to their support structure (i.e. family), and some apply because they really like the philosophy. Some people apply with high stats and some with low.

With that said, the fact that you even ask the question suggests that you are apprehensive about applying. If so, then don't apply. I applied and had a great time and I believe those schools were amazing, but they aren't for everyone: especially, those who do it as a 2nd choice. I'm sure if you study hard enough there will be no reason why you can't get accepted into MD, so good luck.

Don't apply and waste money interviewing if this isn't what you want to do. Just spend some time strengthening your application to ensure that you won't have to apply DO.

Definitely this. Come back with an MCAT score, but you seem to be doing fine and shouldn't worry about needing to apply DO at this point.

👍 OP, if you can break 30 and you apply to a diversified set of schools pretty early (i.e. some reach schools, some competitive schools, and some safety schools), you'll be getting into MD programs.

I would say take mcat and if you don't do as hot as you expect then apply MD & DO. If you apply DO is not going to hurt you, it could only increase your chances of getting accepted somewhere. The only drawback that I see is that you will expend some money on the applications.

I'd say with a sub-30 MCAT you should apply to both. I have a similarly high GPA, but only a 28 on the MCAT. I got into an MD school, but also applied DO and got lots of love from some great programs. Going to the interviews gave me a lot more respect for DOs as well.
