Should I apply as a disadvantaged student?

My family is considered economically disadvantaged. Our income is consistently around 20,000 with a family of 6.

I'm not sure if I should apply as a disadvantaged.
How would applying as a disadvantaged student help me? Or does it hurt my chances of getting accepted?

How do the admissions committee use this section?

Has anyone else applied as disadvantaged?

If you don't want to mess with it, just skip the section. If anything, I think it helps. Don't do it for that reason. Just follow the prompts on the application and answer truthfully like you would any other section.

Who knows how they actually factor it in...but it says this:

"Completing this section is optional. Many dental schools appreciate the fact that some applicants have overcome obstacles on the path to their goals. You are welcome to provide any information and describe any background experiences that may have put you at an educational, social, or economic disadvantage as you prepare to apply to dental schools.

Many dental schools seek to identify applicants who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. If you identify yourself as disadvantaged, answer the questions in this section."

Have you had to overcome challenges because of your circumstances? Did you have to support your family while going to school or were you not able to do something because you had to support your family? If so then fill it out.

I know my family was just as poor but my parents did a fantastic job of keeping me in the dark until I was in college so I'm not going to fill it out. But it looks like you should.
