My stats:
Brown University class of 2014, Biology (focus on physiology and biotechnology)
Overall GPA: 3.61
Prereq GPA: 3.67
GRE: 161V 167Q 5.5AW

Observation: 600 hours outpatient orthopedic

Extra curricular: Year round varsity athlete (Cross country, Track and field), 4 year work study in teaching lab for biology department, 1 year independent study at Rhode Island Hospital (researching preventative detection and treatment of arthritis)

Applied: MGH, UMass Lowell, Northeastern, Simmons, URI, BU, MCPHS (Worcester)
Acceptances: None
Rejections: MGH, UMass Lowell
Interviews: URI, MCPHS

I wasn't really expecting to get into MGH, but the rejection from UMass kind of took me by surprise. I thought my stats were decent and I made sure my LORs were positive but apparently I was still not good enough to get in. I am starting to doubt myself because UMass was (supposedly) the "easiest" program to get into but I still got rejected. My question is whether I should apply to more schools or if I have good enough stats to get into at least ONE of the schools I applied to. Any suggestions of if/where to apply are greatly appreciated!

The problem with Umass, is it has reserved seat in the dpt program for its ex. physiology class undergrad class. With this it cuts down more than 1/3 of dpt class size, making the avaliable seats for everyone else in the 20"s only! ( the same with northeastern). But Don't get discouraged, if you meet the minimum for admission, one school will accept you. Keep us updated!

Yeah and umass is the only state school in MA so it is actually really competitive. Your stats are really good I'm surprised you didn't get an interview at MGH but you'll end up getting in somewhere

Your application was better than mine and I got accepted to several schools. You applied to competitive programs so don't be surprised that you got rejected. Those New England schools are prestigious programs that only take the best of the best. I bet you will get into at least two schools.

Thanks for the replies! I guess my mistake was assuming that the state schools weren't very competitive. I'm kind of going crazy just waiting to hear back from schools and it's reassuring to hear that (at least in your opinions) that I will probably get in to at least one of my schools.

Also, if you get a bit more variety of observation hours and different settings, that might make your application a bit more appealing. Just a thought...

Your GRE scores are amazing! Im sure you'll get into a good school. I got an interview with MGH with lower stats so maybe what they said above about varying your experiences was the difference maker. For MGH, I think they required both inpatient and outpatient settings. I also got my recommendations from PTs in both settings and my program leader so that could be a factor. But like I said, your stats and credentials are awesome and Im sure you'll get into a few, if not most of those schools! Im a waiting Simmons applicant as well, and I was accepted into FIU this past Monday.

PS. Make sure you research the programs well to clarify any discrepancies. I elected not to apply to Umass, Northeastern, or Springfield College because they all accept the bulk of their students directly from undergrad, BU I skipped as well because my GPA was not a 3.6-3.7 and their program leader told me over the phone that essentially I wasn't as competitive.

Yeah, I figured going in that a weak spot in my application was that I had all my hours in one setting. I was lucky enough to get into URI though and since its way cheaper than any of the other schools I applied to I just sent in my deposit today, it's a weight off my shoulders! I guess it doesn't really matter how it ends up for the other schools I applied to.

When did you hear back from MCPHS? They were waiting for my fall grades.

I haven't heard back from them yet. I had my interview on the 13th though and they said they give out decisions 1-2 weeks after interviewing.

your stats are really great- I really do suggest you apply to more schools - I applied to 5 schools and had interviews with all of them and my stats are lower than yours. I'm surprised you didn't get in anywhere yet... don't lose hope just keep pushing...you're almost there! good luck!!

how was the interview there? i just received my interview date from them; I've had an interview already with one other school so i sort of know what to expect but its definately likely to vary some what between schools. also, i guess my biggest concern is more how long was the whole visit? I'm flying in and planning to leave the same night so hoping itll still work out as planned

The interview wasn't too bad. I had only had one interview before and that one was a bit more laid back than the one at MCPHS but it wasn't wicked grueling or anything. You have to do a 30 minute writing sample and then they walk you to the PT department. I talked with a faculty member for 20-30 minutes then got a tour of the facilities. There was another person with me when I interviewed and she had her interview and tour separately so I had to wait in the PT department's office while she had her interview and tour. After that you go back to admissions and talk briefly with an admissions counselor. All in all I was there from 1:30 until about 4:15.
