Hi all,

I recently received my MCAT score, which has caused me to become cautiously optimistic about my chances of going the MD route..

GPA: Will end up being around 3.4-3.5 by graduation (definitely my red flag, extremely positive trend however)
MCAT: 513 (128/128/128/129)
Not URM
ECs: Decent amount of clinical experience (EMT, work in hospital, etc), non-clinical volunteering showing a passion, clinical volunteering showing a passion, extensive work history showing my passion as well as work ethic (full-time during summer, 20+ hours a week during school), a couple leadership positions
Extras: small scholarship, Dean's list (once so far, fingers crossed), multiple passions/stress-relievers that really show through my history
Residence: CA (woe is me)- ties in Michigan, Ohio, New Jersey, Tennessee, Arizona, Washington

Schools I will apply to: UCSD, UWash (strong family ties to area and desire to work in region after school), University of Arizona-Tuscon (strong family ties in region), UCD, AZCOM (family in area), MSU (family ties), Ohio State (weaker family ties, personal interest in the school)

Not sure where to start with regards to schools where I don't have an obvious connection to. I would love to look into East Coast schools, but am concerned about chances since I have no connection to the region.

Will apply to OD schools as well, but I want to hear thoughts on possibility of getting into an MD program.

I realize my stats are not superb, any slap into reality if I am reaching too far is appreciated.

Thanks for any and all input!

For MD consider these schools:
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Albany
New York Medical College
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Penn State
Oakland Beaumont
Western Michigan
Medical College Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin
Creighton
Tulane
GW
Georgetown
any new private schools that open in 2018 (Roseman, Seton Hall, etc.)
You are competitive for all DO schools so apply to several.

Why do you say Vermont? From what I see, their stats are much higher than what I have to offer

Forget U WA. You're not a WWAMI resident.

Ties mean nothing unless your grew up in a state or went to school there. Adcoms don't care if your mom now lives in the state.
Forget UCSD as well. Everyone wants to go there.

Your GPA should have you apply to some DO schools for insurance. Start with Touro-CA, both Westerns, PacNW, TUNCOM and AZCOM.

@Goro Do you think my MCAT would allow me to at least be considered at UC Davis? I was beginning to think I would really only be considered for DO schools, until I got my MCAT score.

Is it still going to be difficult to be looked at for MD school on the East Coast with subpar stats and CA residency?

I guess I don't really know where I stand with the unbalanced GPA/MCAT scores..

UCD, UCI and UCR (if you're from the Inland Empire ) are doable.

I think that you're competitive for the low tier MD schools, like Drexel, VCU, Wake, etc

Awesome thank you for your input!! I am glad there is still a possibility at the MD route.. will definitely apply to many DO schools still.
Do you think getting a decent MCAT score supports my upward GPA trend: ie shows that I really can handle the material, I just had a rocky start?

Yup!
