I haven't heard back from several schools. I was wondering if it would be appropriate to call the admissions office and ask about my application status???

Yes do it. I called UNLV to ask about my status and some other questions, then the very next day I got an interview invite. When you call be sure to also ask some other questions as well.I haven't heard back from several schools. You may also want to ask when they plan on interviewing through. It is starting to get late in the cycle and many schools have finished or are nearing completion.
I got the same response when I called UNLV. If you gave them your name and they noted in your file that you called then you calling can only do good.
Edit: Oh yeah a few days ago I set aside a few hours and called all the schools that didn't reject me, that's 10 schools. I felt much better afterwards too.
