I'm currently a sophomore student for my bachelor's degree. Career-wise, I'm looking at being a pastor. Several of the seminaries that I have been interested in have dual degree M.Div./M.S.W. programs. Looking into things and considering my options, trying to work with people is what I would like to do. Getting an M.S.W. would definitely compliment the education I'd receive while trying to be a pastor.

The question is that, right now, I'm a political science major and am minoring in both communications studies and economics. Is getting a degree in these fields bad for an M.S.W. program? Would being a poli sci major be looked down upon or should I just change my major?

I'd rather not change my major this late in the game but, if I had to, I'd do so.

Social work tends to have a strong social justice focus, so I don't think a political science or economics background would be looked down on at all--depending on the program, maybe the opposite. As long as you fulfill the necessary pre-reqs (check each program) and have a convincing SOP/LORs/EC's, I think you'll be fine. 🙂

I feel rather confident that I'd be able to have a decent application for an M.S.W. program now.

Thanks 🙂

Depending on the MSW program they might have an Advanced Standing option which basically (depending on your undergraduate academic success) cuts up to one year off of the program. This is what I did. The caveat is that you have to have a Bachelor's Degree of Social Work. You are only a sophomore, if you would switch, now would be the time.
