Hello, I am student at a 4 year university and i just finished my third year. My academic profile is pretty weak, due to various reasons, i have around a 2.9 cum gpa and a 2.6 science gpa. I am taking my mcat in June and it is very up in the air on how i will do. My school offers a 5th year MA program that has a 95% matriculation rate into med schools, but my parents really want me to go for it this application cycle. What are my chances, should i consider another career path? should i go to grad school? any and all advice is appreciated

I would recommend reading this: Goro's advice for pre-meds who need reinvention

Other than that your chances aren't good with <3.00 GPA. See this chart: https://www.aamc.org/download/321508/data/factstablea23.pdf

Even then, those who get in with <3.0 GPA probably have some outstanding EC's, PS, etc. I'd say, more often than not, they probably have something that makes their application stand out.

However, if you are URM and apply to HBC's or low-tier state schools (and the like), your chances, theoretically, might not be too bad. That being said though, with a <3.0 GPA, it's really hard to say one way or another even with everything else in your favor.

If you must apply though, apply broadly to DO as well.

You should definitely not take the MCAT this June because with your GPAs, you won't be getting in anywhere this coming cycle. You're going to need to work on fixing your GPA, and that unfortunately means even if you do good in your MCAT, it will still expire in 3 years for most schools.

Also, don't let your parents push you into making stupid mistakes. Most parents don't even know what Med school admissions entails let alone knowing what it takes to get you in. I say go at your own pace, be patient, fix your GPA, then destroy the MCAT, and when you're all set apply. There's no point in rushing anything. Med schools ain't going no where, so please put in the work needed to put your best foot forward because being a re-applicant has never helped anyone.
