I got my first of 4 biochem exams grade back and it wasn't pretty, equivalent to a D. I managed to do well and claw out an A/B for Orgo 1/2 respectively and my gpa is pretty strong atm (3.75 or so) but this one blindsided me. I go to UF, which allows two 'free' drops past the add/drop period per 60 credit hours. I used one of these my first semester on my bio 1 class (family issues kept me away from class for a while and I decided I'd rather retake for the higher GPA then stick with it) but to my understanding, this doesn't/wouldn't show up on my transcript.

On the other hand, final grades in this class are assigned based on ranking in the class, with the median grade being a B. So even though I did bad on this one (50 points and the average was 70) I don't think its impossible to recover some if I knock the other 3 exams out of the park (they all have different teachers also). The downside is that I'd have to fit this 4 credit class somewhere else into my pretty crowded schedule (I'm a Business Admin major with a health specilization), but I might be able to just do a second business course this summer to make that work. Right now this is a 16 credit semester for me, so maybe if I did drop I could make use of the time to really nail my genetics and business law courses and get more shadowing/volunteering done.

tl;dr bad time on first biochem exam, might be able to pull it out but would be very tough in a crowded semester. I could drop it without getting a W on my transcript, and would have to retake it next semester. The extra time this semester could be put towards working or otherwise volunteering and shadowing. My gpa is currently strong and I am a junior.

If you withdraw now and end up with a W in your transcript, you might as well tough it out for the next few tests until the very last day to withdraw to see if you're able to get your grade up.
If you can't get it up by then, and you're concerned about it then drop it.
You also have to concern is this class taking up too much of your study time in other classes.

Edit: I just looked up UF's last withdrawl date (Nov 23), if you can't a decent grade by Nov 23, then drop the class.

Dropping a course is not a problem when there's no chance of bringing your grades up. As of now, like above posters have said, see what grades follow before withdrawing if possible. However, if you're not doing well in other courses too because of this biochem class, drop it and don't think twice. Your GPA is significantly more important than 1-2 W's.
Fair warning, at my UF interview, they asked about my 1 W. BUT I did still receive an acceptance and scholarship offer following the interview. So it's not going to break you, and neither will one low grade on your GPA. However, I would choose the W over a drop in GPA on such an important class when you have the opportunity to still come out with an A in biochem if you retake.
