Hi everyone,

I am a 22yo med student in Paris, France, and i feel the need to share some of my worries on what what i should do in the future
I don't know if you guys are familiar with medical studies in France but next year in june 2018 I'll pass a national exam called the ECN and depending on how well I do at this exam, I'll choose my medical specialty

For the last 2 years, my dream has been to become a radiologist, but whenever I tell this to people they always say that radiology has no future, AI will make radiologists more or less useless, other specialties will take the work, incomes will fall, and jobs won't be secure.

So I'm really in a bad position right now, my dream is not as appealing as it used to be, but i can't see myself doing anything else

What do you think?

In the case I still pursue a career as a radiologist, what kind of extra skills would be desirable?
I heard that skills in computer science, and data management would be nice, but i have no idea...

Do you plan to stay in France as a radiologist? Or are you asking with an eye toward moving to the United States for residency? I'm asking because I don't think most people here know much about what it's like to practice as a radiologist in France or even Europe so we couldn't really help you. If you want to ask about radiologist in an American context, you could ask the radiology forum.

SDN also has a Europe forum. Maybe you would have some luck there as well?

Don't listen to people that have 0 expertise in a field and think they know everything about it.

True but some of this comes from radiologists themselves referring to what's happening in the US

I think what will happen in the US will happen in France with a 5-10 years delay maybe, so I'd like your perspective on that,
although moving to the United States would be a dream for me but that's another question

I'll check the radiology forum thank you

Have you experienced interventional rads?

Rads will always be around. Interventional Rads is a lot more hands on.

Idk why everyone is freaking out about AI in medicine. If you look at many industries, AI is taking over jobs that require repetitive physical requirements (sorting boxes, screwing bolts) or face-to-face customer data acquisition (ordering food at McDonald's). If AI takes over medicine it will replace the lower jobs first (receptionists, techs, etc).

No one wants a robot taking care of them, and no doctor wants a robot reading their imaging studies.
