Hi everybody,

At the fall quarter i am going to take intro to biochemistry, biochemistry 1, physical chemistry for biochemists, sociology, and in addition i am going to do undergrad research. I am still in doubts if i should go for it...

Thus, i have two questions: 1) Would you go for it and take all these classes in one quarter?
2) I want to have an early start for my biochem class, so what topics would you recommend me to cover on my own time before class actually starts?

Any advice is appreciated.

If you're crazy smart when it comes to the sciences and have baller study skills and really want to, go for it. Then again, if you have an alternative to taking these together, doing what you're thinking of is probably a reckless way to risk your GPA.

I did something similar. Biochemistry is a lot of memorization. PChem is a lot of understanding. I think the vast differences between these two courses helps to somewhat mitigate how painful it is to take them together.

Why are you taking intro to biochem and biochem I at the same time? Seems beyond redundant and quite frankly I am surprised your institution's registrar would allow it.

If you were just taking biochem I and pchem along with the research and sociology, you could be fine. Really depends how you have historically responded to a lot of volume / exams that are very demanding. Also, sociology classes can be hit or miss... I have had friends take them with some saying they were a cake walk while others regret taking the class for fun. The common factor that dictates ease seems to be the class format i.e sociology textbook vs. bounds of random articles and journal readings.

I'd drop intro to biocem (unless for some crazy reason it is required. Everything else should be fine as long as you have good study skills and time management.

And in my opinion, I think the best way to prepare for biochem would be just to go back and review some of your organic chem notes to refresh it in your mind (at my school o chem is a prereq for it, this may not be the case at yours though).

Thanks for responses 🙂. I am taking intro to biochem because it is required by my major, and biochemistry coarse for my electives...
