I just had an MRI, and it turned out to be L5-S1 disc herniation. I am starting dental school in 7 months. I am wondering if I should rethink about my career choice since it will certainly hurt my back...

Haha, I have the same thing: L5-S1. You'll be fine, just keep up PT everyday, always stretch and exercise the area. It'll get better over time.

Whether your job requires sitting, standing, lifting, moving, etc. your back will likely be an issue. You're already in. Just do the necessary exercises/stretches and develop a good posture early on in dental school.

May I ask how you guys got the herniated discs?

I have no idea! I have pretty good posture and I am only 22... I guess I got it from working out inappropriately ( sit-ups and squatting).

I'm still amazed someone would ask if they should do their career in dentistry after doing everything to actually get accepted because you hurt your back...Don't know if you should with that kind of dedication lol.

He's not trying to work his tail off to become a dentist only to realize he can't work in 5 years....

OP : I'd say if it isn't that bad and you can manage it, go for it.

Personally, health always comes first before family and career. Hopefully it won't be a problem though.

It's a herniated disc, he didn't break his back. He's 22.....I rest my case lol.

...it's a herniated disc... he didn't break his back lol. I've broken a rib, my jaw, and my foot while in dental school. Other than BOTH of my hands being cut off, there is nothing that will stop me. Also had a herniated disc from deadlifting.... he's 22 I rest my case.

I sincerely hope you won't be having any others injuries in the future. P.S. I have never broken any bones before ( I noticed that in the States people's injuries rates due to sports were unheard of for someone like me from a country where sports/bodybuilding has not been that prevalent. Anyway, please do realize that people have different thresholds and values)
