I just finished my freshman year with 5 A's, 2 B's and 2 C's... the B's and C's came in my Biology and Chemistry classes... should I even bother continuing or should I look into another field?? I really like medicine and it runs my family (although my dad went to Mexico and my uncle went to a DO school) so I really dont care how I become a doctor so long as I become one. Prestige and all that stuff is no issue. Your input is much appreciated.

First year is nothing! Just pull it together and study really hard. If this is what you want to do, don’t let one year affect the rest of your life! Just learn from this, figure out why you did so badly, and do better.

I'm sure that there have been people who've started off worse than you. I know I did. I ended up with all C's for my science classes freshman year, but I brought my grades up in subsequent pre-req classes. This is key, Omidjoon, you've got to bring those grades up. Freshman year is way too soon to freak out.

I got 3 C's my freshman year, with one of those in chemistry. I was accepted to 5 schools.

I will reiterate what the others have said. You don't have to give up.

If you want a good chance at getting in when you're finished to try to get your science grades up. Take a deep breath, relax, and then take a step back and see what you could do better. Look at study habits (probably the BIG one for most college freshman), amount of time available to study (are you working too much?), etc. Go into next year with a good attitude. I had a bad start my first semester of my freshman year, and getting in wasn't a problem at all.

Good luck.

I agree... Do NOT give up this early in the game. You are not out of the game. Just work hard over the next few years and you should be fine. Don't forget to start volunteering now so you can have a number of years in a clinical EC.

Good luck!!

Relax. Enjoy your summer. Work hard in the next semester and ask for help if you need it. An upward trend is better than a downward one.

ditto!

Don't sweat it. my undergrad was horrible. I came back 13 years latter, polished polished my gpa, and landed my first choice among others...

Just balance time for blowing off steam and getting the work done....good luck!

Science is hard. Even if you like the classes you might not do well in them. Work harder. I'm starting medical school this fall even though I had some terrible science grades throughout my academic career.

Medical school is going to be harder. And then there will be the long nights on call during residency. Medicine, and the science behind it, is fun. That's why alot of people are drawn to it. But its not easy, which is why most pre-meds eventually end up as business majors or some other unrelated pursuit. Its also why doctors earn lots of money...most people can't handle the demands of the process.

If you want to be a doctor, suck it up. Learning persistence now is going to make the rest of it alot easier later on. In the end only you can decide if the sacrifices (time, pleasures, comforts) are going to be worth it.

"Third: Did you know Bill Brasky is the godfather of my son?

Fourth: Bill Brasky?

First: He's a big fella!

Second: Oh yeah, he's a big guy! Goes about 6'7", 385.

Third: Well, anyway.. he shows up at the church in his golf pants, caked in mud. Well, ol' Bill Brasky pushes the priest aside and says, "I'll baptize that piece of calamari!" Then he pours Scotch all over my baby son and says, "There! You're baptized!"

Fourth: And your son is blind to this day!

First: Yeah, he makes brooms somewhere in Georgia, doesn't he?

Third: I have no idea. [ pause ] To Bill Brasky!

Together: Bill Brasky!!"

When I was in school I had one semester with a 0.5 gpa. But for some reason that didn't stop me. I was at a disadvantage when I applied to med school because I didn't have the high gpa everyone else did. Even if you don't bring up your grades to the same level as everyone else you can do other things like volunteer, get an interesting job, travel, anything to make you different from the rest. I didn't get in my first year of applying, but I made it in this year. So I think if I can do it most anyone can if they have enough determination.
