My school has a mandatory attendance policy. I find that I get much more done If I just stay home in the morning and read the book or rewatch lectures. Then in the afternoon/evening I watch the morning lectures I missed.

If I go to lecture and get confused about something I cant go back and rewind it like I can watching it on my computer. Is this a no brainer? Pretty much the only things I would go to are the OPP and anatomy labs.

So what I don't understand is how can you skip if it's mandatory? I would definitely not skip if I was going to lose points or whatever they do to enfore attendance.

Now if no one was checking whether or not you attended and you learn better at home then go ahead and skip. I would still try to attend class sometimes so people don't notice you aren't ever there.

Now if you do have to attend class why not just bring in other stuff to study while there? You could read, make flash cards, etc.

I wouldnt be able to wake up if I didnt go to class...I would sleep in everyday.

Yeah that's the other perk I enjoy from it too.

I think it would be rude to bring stuff with me to class and just go over it right there.

So do you think DCOM enforces their policy 😀? I dont get very much from listening to kick/foster in class unless i can rewind

Everyone is different. I recently stopped going to class and spend my time being less stressed and actually getting more work done. I'll let you know how it works out:soexcited:

Who are you? lol

I don't think they enforce their policy. They have said that they could pass around a roll sheet but I don't think they do it for the regular lectures probably only for something special. I'm sure some people miss classes in order to study on their own. I also get the feeling that I would rather just watch the video so I can pause and rewind whenever I want.

Btw it doesn't look like everyone is in class this morning

And I wouldn't feel bad about bringing other stuff to class. Just don't sit in the front. I definitely see people doing flashcards during class. Or you could make the flashcards on your computer. Those are pritty neat I think.

i've always wondered something... if a school is going to go to the trouble and expense of recording a lecture, why would they have mandatory class?? Do one or the other I say... I for one am someone that learn better by someone teaching it to me live. If I don't force myself to sit there and listen to the lecture I won't ever do it...

A funny story about that though, I was talking with a physician who had an 8am friday lecture scheduled. He showed up and there were like 30 people there, so he told them to turn off the video recorder, because if he had to get up to give the lecture, and those students got up to come to the lecture, they should be the ones to benefit, not everyone else! gutsy, but good for him...

Well I think they record it so we can use it as a reference if we miss something in class. But of course there are people who decide they can just not ever go to class and watch the lectures later.

I find that I have a hard time paying attention in class because I know I can watch it again later. So I see what you're saying.

I rewatch just about every lecture anyway. I also found it funny when everyone was studying for the lab practical the night before the test and it was like a disco party, there were people in there I had never seen before. I was like, uhh this person's in our class?

Anyway I kinda miss going so ill prob be there. I may listen to older lectures though :meanie:

I go to about half of my classes, but get a lot more out of studying at home. I find that if the lecture isn't working, I am able use my study materials during the lecture. That way, I can be present, but don't get screwed up if the lecturer's style clashes my learning style.

OMG the night before the last lab practical was crazy. 80s music though??? I mean cmon  Of course I really don't expect anyone to play what I prefer. And yes I see some people in lab only on the nights before the practicals.

80's music is awesome what are you talkin about! It's so damn catchy. Plus, it was 80's music AND daft punk so that made it even better.

I am struggling with the battle of going vs. not going as well. When I do skip, I sleep in (sleeping in for me is 8:00 or so) and study the days lectures at my pace, fast or slow depending on lecture. The days that I do do this, I feel like I accomplish so much more and have more energy. I like the feeling of it being on MY terms and my pace. I am reluctant though to make this a habit until later on in the year.

Yea my pace is too slow haha. That's why I go to class- we get a lot done in a short amount of time. Plus, the professors do an amazing job of explaining/lecturing material in a way that helps me understand it better in comparison to if I was reading a text or PPT presentation by myself.

Go to the ones that you see will be beneficial. If it's not, you're better off learning through recorded lectures at 1.5x speed and actually studying material rather than wasting time in class, listening to a professor spend twenty minutes on a concept that you could've covered in five.

If a class isn't working for you, but you must attend, wear ear plugs and study whatever you want. It's only for two years that you have to jump through these hoops, and then you'll be off on rotations and doing different stuff (new hoops to jump through, but that's for another discussion).

As for professors who vengefully turn off the video cameras just to screw all the people who aren't there--this is a trick as old as medical school. This kind of game has been going on for many years--my father was in med school decades ago and it was a similar experience then. Too much to learn, too much pressure, and the lecturers were boring/stupid/mean. You just have to survive, and be grateful for the occasional good teacher that accidentally gets hired. Good luck!

Nah, DCOM mosdef doesn't enforce the attendance policy. We haven't had a single pop quiz. Come on, you know you love kiick's lectures! Insulin and Glucagon World 4 lyfe. hahaha, Dr. Foster's jokes aren't as good if you aren't there, but then again you can rewatch them anyways.
