Should I go to DMU interview?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
:whoa:

Not sure what you exactly mean by this... but Des Moines tends to be a pretty liberal metro area and Iowa was the first to legalize gay marriage.

Actually third, but first and still only one in the Midwest

But it is not enough to live in a place that is presumably accepting of an alternative lifestyle. I wanna live it and have a full functioning life.

I feel like zoner is trying to take after MedPR in stirring up controversy. Take Iowa or leave it. It's not that difficult.

Hey I wasn't the one defending iowa

not a problem for everyone obviously... if i was white, married with kids, I would be very very happy there. just that i am a minority in every deviant sexual way possible and it is much better for my kind to be close to a big city and be close to authentic ethnic food

Lol.

You should learn the difference between a controversy and a disagreement. Calling people out like you just did is a great way to stir things up.

Haha. I think I do. But if someone keeps trying to come up with things against an area when others try to bring up good things about an area, it gets a little old. Especially when the school in said area is solid and will give you a decent education.

It's called diversity of opinion. What... descending views aren't allied on here?

It's allowed for sure, but I just find your opinions a little whiny and immature in this thread, that's all 🙂

It sounds like your pretty busy already. Concentrate on the MCAT for the next couple of months--focus on doing as well as possible. Good Luck!

True but I don't normally have anything bad to say about obviously good things. I said DMU was great despite a boring interview day.

if it's is not here where can a grown up go to whine and be immature. Gawd people really do have problem with whining and complaining on here

Lol it's not that, man. There's a difference between picking apart every thing you can to try and not like something and vocalizing it, than just finding the information (What's so great about Des Moines that [insert personality type] would find attractive?) and making your own informed decision. Besides, an area doesn't make the school. Look at Yale and Johns Hopkins!

Anyways, hope you find the school that fits you best!

Really, whining and complaining is just annoying anywhere and everywhere, whether it's from children or adults... or children in the body of adults..

We ll don't read it if it is annoying you

Internet forums, serious business.

As a medical student, I can safely say you wont have much time to do stuff. The key is finding a good group of friends. Then it doesn't matter where you are really.

sorry dude. legalizing gay marriage and recognizing same sex civil unions aren't exactly the same. close, but not quite.

EDIT: unless of course this happened in the last day or two.

Sorry, My bad. It is same sex civil unions here. I think only the name is different in Illinois though... I believe jurisdiction says they get the same rights as married couples. Civil Unions have different meanings and different rights/benefits in different states, but in Illinois it's identical to marriage as of last year.

I just got in a AZCOM, should I still attend DMU interview? I have to leave in an hour

It was never my first top three because of the location. I am a big city kid. Is DMU that great that I should still go to the interview?
By investing the money now, you don't have to worry about the "what if" later.

I really hope you went. DMU is an amazing school. I liked the city, the people... everything was awesome. Yes, I did have preconceived notions of Iowa, and no, I did not have high expectations for this school, but I am so glad that I went because the school jumped to the top of my "Wanted" list.

Dmu is way cheaper than ccom.

Sent from my SGH-T999 using SDN Mobile

about 20k a year cheaper! which over 4 years and with interest is more like 100+ k! yikes

CCOM is more expensive. Just doing some estimations. According to stats from the osteo schools 2013 info book (which had 2011-2012 tuition and cost-of-living costs):

CCOM 2011-2012 = $51,680 tuition + $24,000 COL [avg. 2010 graduate indebtedness was $218,000]
DMU 2011-2012 = $39,230 tuition + $22,915 COL [avg. 2011 graduate indebtedness was $182,840]

...adjusted for 5% annual tuition increases and 3% annual COL increases...for entering 1st year students in 2013-2014:

CCOM 2013-2014 = $57,000 tuition + $25,500 COL
DMU 2013-2014 = $43,300 tuition + $24,400 COL

For students in the Class of 2017, that comes out to a grand potential debt total of (with respective tuition+COL % increases per year):
CCOM = $245,700 tuition + $106,700 COL = $352,400 grand total
DMU = $186,600 tuition + $102,100 COL = $288,700 grand total

[Let's say you take out an annual unsubsidized Stafford Loan at 6.8% every year for 4 years, with the total limit/year capped at $40,500 specifically for medical students. Adjusting for continuously compounding interest, if you don't pay a penny back on the loan and compounded interest, after 4 years you would have a $192,575 loan debt to start paying back.]

In the end, CCOM would cost a total of $63,700 more than DMU after 4 years. Not 100K, but still a lot. (A CCOM student said that the higher tuition costs at CCOM were used to pay for extra, prominent rotation spots in the Chicagoland area so it would be less likely that you should need to rotate all over the state and potentially across several state lines, although it does still happen.)

Granted, I think, at least for me personally, I don't need that high of COL, so my costs might be less, but these are just estimates anyway. In the grand scope of things, I think if you really like a school, everything will work out in the end. I still chose CCOM over DMU. Yes, you'd have to adjust your lifestyle and pinch pennies for the time being, just like at any school, but if it's a school you really want to go to, go.

Wow thank you. neve thought about it that way. What if you compare CCOM to UMDNJ. Can you do the math?

UMDNJ 2011-2012 was $32,805 i.s. tuition, $52,636 oos tuition....plus $24,470 estimated COL...using the same adjustments...

UMDNJ for in-state Class of 2017 = $155,887 tuition + $108,607 COL = $264,500
UMDNJ for oos Class of 2017 = $250,121 tuition + $108,607 COL = $358,700

My impression of the town was that everyone was very active and outdoor-sy. I went to this park (I forgot its name, but maybe some of you DMU students can help me out here) off of Fleur Avenue that had a huge lake and boardwalk. I was surprised to see everyone and their mother out walking/running. Most of the people were young families and couples so maybe Iowa is pretty liberal.

Through out all of this, I'm just glad Zoner isn't going to be a classmate of mine.

Seems like a spoon-fed punk.
