So I have a BU interview here in Toronto on Feb. 16. I've already put my deposit down on Penn. When I was in boston for my harvard interview, I didn't get a chance to check out BU because my interview was on a friday.

I wonder if I should go to my BU interview here. Positives about BU are that it apparently has great facilities and it's in Boston which is a much nicer place to live than the ghettos of Philly. How about price? BUs tuition and "extra" fees seem less than Penn's but I know Boston's more expensive than Philly.

Anything I'm leaving out? I really liked Penn. You can feel how special the school is and they have a decent match rate.

ALso, I've decided if I end up going to the States and paying out my a$$, then I damn well better specialize so that might be something to consider.

I guess my question is, am I missing out by not going to BU?

Not really, though Boston, the city itself, is great!

Audio,

Overall, both schools are expensive. And of there is a price difference, then it’s not significant. So money is not a factor in the equation. In terms of specialty, unlike what SDNers say, there is no such thing as a specialty school. You can specialize from any school. If Penn’s grads specialize a lot, that’s because they want to; not because Penn casts this magic spell on them and boom! They’re matching!! It’s all about what type of students enroll. So if you want to specialize, you can do so from BU as well. And if you have poor grades and a mediocre NBDE 1 score, then you won’t specialize even if you go to Penn. Also, if you’re spending a lot of money in the u.s, that does not mean that you HAVE to specialize. There are kick-butt general dentists that make a lot more money than a lot of specialists. As far as making connections at school, well, BU is just as good as Penn, and Boston is surely not a bad place to make connections. As far as Philly versus Boston, well, you won’t see much of either in the first two years, and Philly does have some nice places to visit. Pennsylvania is very pretty but so is Mass and Cape Cod. Philly may be a bit Ghetto but the cost of living is way less than that in Boston, which means you will eat better and healthier food and have the best type of cereals in the morning. Both schools have great facilities and great clinics, and both schools are private. So that leaves nothing in the equation but two factors: Penn is Ivy while BU is not, and Penn has your deposit while BU does not. So if I were you, I would go for Penn. But I am not you….

one more minor detail: BU has a kick-Butt website...loooove the colors and the flash does not hinder the navigation experience at all....check out the virtual tour of the Sim Lab. their Labs are huge....

Fightingspirit pretty much summed it up . The major difference between the two schools is the ivy name. How much is the Penn deposit? If it isn't too much, there's no reason to not hear the BU people out. I have a biased opinion, but Boston is a much nicer city than Philly- that is part of the reason why Boston is so expensive to live in. You definitely would get a great education at both places, both clinically and in the classroom. Good luck. If you have any Q's about Boston just PM me.

That reminds me. I should cancel my interview. If you already sent an acceptance deposit to U Penn. I suggest you cancel your interview appointment at boston university so other people can have a shot at dental school.

Thanks guys,

I have no idea why BU sometimes gets a bad rep. From the research I've done, it seems like a pretty good school. Hmmm..something to think about.

Well, I'm trying to decide if I'd be interested in attending BU. If I decide that I'm not, then I'll surely cancel my interview asap :)

dude...he's just debating...he has not decided yet...besides, you seem to be pretty happy about UMD so what's up with that statement...lol...why dotn you cancel your acceptance deposit at UMD so that you'd give other people a "shot a d-school"...lol

I would stay with UPenn if I were you, since I'v applied to BU, just kidding :p , but in my honest opinion, they are both great schools, and from what iv heard they are both expensive, UPenn has a better name, Boston is more expensive, but a nicer city. So you should compare these differences and specialty programs for each school, and make your final dicision. Good luck with whatever, and hopefully you will make the correct choice.

I say do the interview...youve put in the time and money to apply. Youve worked hard to get to where you're at. Worst case scenario, you go to Penn and cancel your BU acceptance. Not a bad deal at all.

If you have an extra $$$, I've second Rezdawg's note above.

I would say: skip the interview, go to UPenn and finish in three yrs. :D
[after the 3 yrs, u could even try to get a great MBA education at Upenn to differentiate urself from the others when apply to specialty programs]

How do you finish Penn in 3 years?

Sorry, I was under the impression that UPenn is 3 yrs... (I kinda wondered if that was true or not... i thought i saw that on some post  ) [Cancel my previous post if I was wrong :D ]

You're confusing UPenn with UoP (Pacific). UoP is 3 years.
